What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a holistic approach to pain control that encourages the body to heal itself. The theory, similar to acupuncture, is that pressure points on the sole of the foot correspond to organs in the body. By stimulating the sole of the foot on a particular pressure point, reflexologies believe they can promote the healing of the corresponding organ by encouraging the body to expel toxins.

Reflexology in pregnancy

Reflexology is recommended for stress and raised blood pressure in pregnancy as well as conditions such as constipation, cystitis and morning sickness. As it’s drug free and non invasive it can be an excellent alternative to orthodox medicine and can often compliment it well. During your first consultation your practitioner will take into account your general health and lifestyle as a whole before moving on to treat particular aches and pains.

Reflexology safety

Warning Reflexology is not suitable if you have a history of miscarriage or if you’re at risk of pre-eclampsia and other pregnancy complications. If you’re at all concerned speak to your GP and reflexology practitioner for their advice and do not attempt any self-help techniques.

Side effects Some people find they have a mild reaction to treatment including flu-like symptoms or a rash. This is thought to be a sign that toxins are leaving your body and should pass quite quickly.

Reflexology in labour

As with acupuncture, reflexology can be used as an alternative to pain medication during labour and it has been suggested as a way to reduce the length of labour. Speak to your midwife about your arrangements.

After giving birth you may wish to continue your treatment to aid recovery as it is recommended for post birth niggles and healing.
