  • Alicia Silverstone: ‘Giving birth is sexy’

Clueless star Alicia Silverstone was not only lucky enough to enjoy pregnancy, but also sung the praises of her 27-hour labour.

“The first 14 hours were almost sexy. The [natural hormone] oxytocin was doing all this magic and it felt amazing,” she said.

Alicia’s son Bear Blue is now almost 3, so we wonder if there’s a bit of a rosy tint on those memories?

She also explained how she enjoyed eating her son's placenta - although not served up as a steak. “Someone gifted me my placenta in the form of a pill. They encapsulate it. And I have to tell you that I really loved it.

“I got to the point that my husband said, 'Did you have your happy pills today? And I was really sad when they were gone. It really helped me.”

Alicia is aware that her views are sometimes viewed as controversial. “It’s cool if others disagree,” she said. Which is probably just as well...

  • Alanis Morissette: ‘Birth was a transcendental experience’

American singer Alanis Morissette spoke out about the ‘transcendental experience’ of giving birth to her 2-year-old son Ever at home, saying it was "beyond pain".

Speaking to Today, Alanis revealed: “I didn’t really even imagine myself having the birth experience in the hospital.

“My home is like my little sanctuary.”

On Christmas Day in 2011, Alanis gave birth to her son drug-free with her husband Mario Treadway by her side and with the help of a midwife and a doula.

She said: “The experience was beyond pain.

“It was a transcendental experience. I just went to this whole other world. I basically had to be the little soldier that I am and really focus on this new beautiful creature coming out of me.”

But although Alanis doesn’t regret her decision to have a home birth, she admits it wasn’t easy.

She said: “I think once people know it’s quite possible to have a really amazing home birth - and in my case I have no regrets and would do it again and in the same breath it wasn’t the easiest experience of my life - I think having it be an option is really exciting.” (Wow, that's a complicated sentence!)

Many mums agree (though not in Alanis-speak) that home births can be really positive. If you’re having a straightforward pregnancy, home birth can be a safe option, but remember, pain relief is limited to gas and air. Or, as in Alanis' experience, simply squeezing your husband's hand... tight.

  • Beyonce: ‘I had a very strong connection with my child during labour’

Beyonce has admitted she ‘felt a communication’ with Blue Ivy while in labour.

Talking to Marie Claire Australia, Beyonce described the ‘strong connection’ she had from 8 months in to Blue Ivy's birth.

She said: “I felt very maternal around 8 months.

“And I thought I couldn't become any more until I saw the baby... But it happened during my labour because I had a very strong connection with my child. I felt like when I was having contractions, I envisioned my child pushing through a very heavy door. And I imagined this tiny infant doing all the work, so I couldn't think about my own pain... We were talking. I know it sounds crazy, but I felt a communication.”

Beyonce has been careful not keep nurturing that bond, taking Blue with her on her world tour.

She said: “She's my road dog. She's my homey, my best friend.”

  • Goldie Hawn: ‘Imagine your va-jay-jay as a large magnolia flower blossoming’

When Kate Hudson was in labour with her son Bingham, her mum Goldie Hawn was on hand to offer some, err, words of encouragement.

Kate told US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, “She brings a magnolia flower. And she sort of starts to do these visualisations with me. And she’s going, ‘Imagine your va-jay-jay as a large magnolia flower blossoming.”

Kate added, “My mum’s going to the doctor, ‘That’s not normal. Is that normal?’ It really was a Woody Allen film.”

  • Kim Kardashian: ‘The first thing I did after giving birth was look at my vagina in the mirror’

What did Kim Kardashian do as soon as she left hospital after giving birth to baby North West?

She reached for the mirror – and checked out her vagina.

So claimed Kim, talking to her sister Khloe on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. “The first thing I did was go and look at my vagina in the mirror," she says. "It looks better-looking than before.”

Kim insists, too, that she had no problems during labour. She says: “Labour was honestly the easiest thing ever. I did not feel one thing. Like, it was not hard.

“And then just staring at her…Everything that they say that happens is so true, like you fall so in love and it’s this deep connection.”
