A mum off a young cancer patient has become the first woman to give birth at Great Ormond Street in its 157-year history.
Nicole Tyler, 32, was visiting her 6-year-old daughter Kelly, who is being treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, when she unexpectedly went into labour.
The mum-of-three from Canvey Island, Essex, went onto give birth on her daughter’s ward, as the children’s hospital doesn’t have a maternity ward.
Helped along by the senior nurse, healthy baby boy Zac was born safely and spent the first four days of his life in the ward in Great Ormond Street, where his big sister Kelly was completing her treatment.
And it seems that Kelly was more than happy to share her hospital room with her new baby brother. “Her smile said everything, she was really pleased. She kept calling all the nurses in saying ‘come see my brother,’” her mum told the London Evening Standard.
“It’s incredible that such a broad team of specialists helped me give birth to my beautiful baby boy and I cannot thank them enough, not just for the care they gave to Zac and I, but for what they have done for Kelly.”
Kelly and her sister Chloe, 9, and little brother Zac are all back at home in Essex where Kelly is recovering from her treatment.
