Increased risk of miscarriage linked to ibuprofen in pregnancy

A new study has found that the risk of miscarriage doubles when mums-to-be take ibuprofen

Women who take ibuprofen during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, despite the warnings on the packet advising against using this painkiller, are 2.4 times more likely to suffer from a miscarriage, reseachers have said.

Around one in six mums-to-be are apparently still using ibuprofen, reports the Daily Mail.

Researchers found that taking ibuprofen, and similar painkillers like naproxen, can lead to the embryo not being properly implanted in the womb. This means a women is far more likely to suffer a miscarriage, which is also known as a spontaneous abortion.

The new results come from a study of 47,050 women aged between 15 and 45 by the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

"Women who were exposed to any type and dosage of non-aspirin NSAID during early pregnancy were more likely to have a spontaneous abortion," said Dr Anick Berard, from the study.

However doctors say that the risk of women suffering a miscarriage due to painkillers is still small, and that other possible causes such as smoking and obesity were not taken into consideration in this study.

Paracetamol was also researched in the study and is still deemed safe to use during pregnancy.

"It is important that any woman before conception and during pregnancy plans their pregnancy and reduces their risk of any complications through maintaining a healthy lifestyle," said Dr Virginia Beckett, from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
