Japanese hospital's plan for abandoned babies

Plans have been approved to set up a baby 'hatch' to accept abandoned newborns at Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto, Japan.

Posted: 26 February 2007

Parents who decide they can't raise their baby will be able to place the newborn in a specially designed infant incubator through a door that can be opened from the outside of the building.

When a baby is placed in the incubator, a sensor notifies doctors. Children left in the hatch will be named by the city mayor and handed over to infant homes.

Views are split over the idea. Some think the hatch will save lives that would otherwise be lost, while others believe it could encourage people to abandon their babies.
