NHS braced for mini baby boom

Cold winter blamed for a surge in mums-to-be as the NHS expects a mini baby boom this Autumn

Could a mini baby boom hit the south coast this autumn?

The NHS is said to be bracing itself for a mini baby boom after the cold winter sparked a rise in the number of mums-to-be.

Late August and September traditionally sees a rise in the number of newborns, which is believed to be a result of couples enjoying time with each other away from work.

In Portsmouth, over 600 12-week scans were carried out in March – 100 more than the monthly average for the area.

"We do see a rise in conception rates when there's been severe weather. The weather does have an impact,” independent midwife Joy Horner told the Portsmouth News.

"The snow could definitely be the reason for the baby boom next month.

"If you can’t get out of your house, you've got to find some way to keep yourself occupied!" added Joy.

With a mini baby boom predicted, hospitals in Portsmouth are making sure they are fully prepared for any mums-to-be that may go into labour.

"The higher number of mothers due to give birth from September onwards will be an obvious challenge for us due to the extra demand upon our services,” explained Julie Dawes, director of nursing at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

“But we remain committed to continuing to provide the highest possible standard of care to mothers and their babies in the safest environment," added Julie
