Plans to give pregnant women their own parking bays

Pink parking badges for mums-to-be in Wales

Heavily pregnant women might be issued with pink badges for parking

Heavily pregnant women could be given designated parking bays closer to the shops under a Wales-only law.

The pink badge, which would work in a similar way to the blue badge, enables the expectant mum to park nearer to the shops and help ease the strain of carrying heavy bags to far away car parks.

“There is evidence to suggest that a lot of pregnant women in their later stages stay away from the shops because they can’t cope with the walking,” Clwyd West Conservative explained. “They can also get prosecuted for using mother and baby spaces too. We want to make it easier for them.”

If the plans go ahead, pregnant women in the last three months of their pregnancy can be issued with a pink parking badge from their GP or midwife. The spaces will be located as close to shopping facilities as the blue badge spaces. “Anything that makes pregnant women’s lives easier, especially in the last trimester, is good,” said Karen Jewell of the Royal College of Midwives for Wales.

What a great idea! I can remember struggling around supermarket car parks when I was heavily pregnant, and it doesn't help that they're always so busy! Really hope this catches on beyond Wales

I think it is a wonderful idea! We need it in England. I hope it does come to England

its a brilliant idea but i hope that if it takes off we dont hear stories of it being abused like mother and child spaces are at the moment.  Anything that makes life easier for pregnant women should be welcomed

i think they need to have 'family spaces' so whether your pregnant, got babys or children that need help in and out and they NEED to have RULEs, i had a row with some stupid and i mean obviously quite thick women as her t pre-teen clambered out of her huge car in the space we were heading too, it sayes on asdas signs children that need help being belted in etc, silly cow, said theyre my kids, so this is a kids space, i wanted to scream.

I do think the pregnant ones are a great idea, but they need a reasonable time where your entilted to it, saying visibly isnt on, some people are at 10wks some not until days before, and how do you prove you should get a space??

Good point there Lau,as with everything that could be abused, yet desperately needed. We all know what it was like squeezing by anothr car door praying you dont scratch it with your door as your huge tum catches it!!!!

I think it's a great idea, but alas someone will take the piss. Always happens. Oh ignore me-I'm having a right bad day, everything narking me today-had massive row with an oap in aldi car park, was not pretty. And for once not over parking in bay your'e not supposed to!!!!!!

Think I'll head off.........hope I'm less ratty in the morning

Probably made their day gave them something to gossip about.

The badges thing is tricky. Some women have easier pregnancies than others. If you have SPD from early on you need the badge from then, but other women might be fit right until the end.

If someone parks that close to me I can't get the door open,I usually leave my mark and open the door at least as far as I need.I have had a couple of can't squeeze between the mirrors moments, which were more amusing than anything else.

On the whole I just get on with it when pregnant,I mean you are pregnant,it's a temporary state not an illness and woe betide anyone who tries to treat me like an invalid. On the other hand if you're at the state you can't walk would it not be just as sensible to have your doctor/midwife issue you with a badge/certificate that allows you to share the disabled spaces for the short period you need them.I'd certainly consider a lady short of breath, walking painful, finding it difficult to get in and out of their vehicle,to be somewhat less able bodied than your average person

That is a good idea Jo,can they issue badges to share with disabled spaces? I didn't know that. Yeah only last 2 months that bothered me,spose really I should have just shopped on-line,would have saved me a lot of trouble!

When I looked after my uncle(who is in a wheelchair now) it took forever to get a blue badge, hope it doesn't take as long for pregnant women, hey'd have given birth before paperwork completed!!!!!

They can't,I meant they should, but that's never going to happen.Even if there are half a dozen empty.

I had problems walking for a lot of my last pregnancy so I didn't go shopping.Still had to do the school runs though,no special parking places there. You just get on with it,you're not pregnant very long

I agree with theoldwomanwholivesinashoe (is that the longest name ever?). I think the passes should be issued to the people who have the most problems eg SPD or maybe multiple pregnancies as the majority of pregnant women should be capable of pushing a trolley across the supermarket car park ("carrying heavy shopping bags"-who does that these days?). There is a evidence that keeping fit throughout your pregnancy helps you give birth more easily so I think for most people it would be better to walk. Personally, I found it quite annoying when I was pregnant and people treated it like an illness but then I did have 2 very easy pregnancies (now on my third).

If they want to offer something useful to pregnant women how about free public toilets?!!
