Ramadan fasting bad for baby?

Observing Muslim tradition of fasting while pregnant linked to low birth weights and higher chance of disability

Muslim mums-to-be have been warned that fasting during their pregnancy can be harmful to their baby. Researchers found the mums who fasted during Ramadan while pregnant were more likely to give birth to smaller babies.

The study also found that women who fasted were 10% less likely to give birth to a boy and their babies were roughly 20% more likely to suffer from a physical or mental disability.

The trend was most apparent when Ramadan fell early in a woman’s pregnancy especially during the summer months where long hours of daylight mean longer periods spent without food.

If you are concerned that your baby might not get enough nutrients from you during Ramadan this August, speak to your GP or midwife for all the information you need to keep your baby healthy.

Well as I muslim I am wondering why are pregnant women fasting in ramadhan. You do not have to fast if you are pregnant. It isn't recommended, instead, you make up for it when your in full health!! About 2 years ago
