  • Why a baby sling could be good for you

A sling is (usually) a structured bit of fabric which lets you carry your baby against your body (front or back). It's a great way of keeping your hands free and for a baby, it's the closest thing to being back in the womb; hearing your heart beat, feeling the warmth from your body and snuggling in tight as you move around can be soothing and calming for a newborn.

Slings differ from baby carriers in that they don't usually have clips, buckles or buttons - they are far less formal and can be used from birth.

Carriers tend to have safety restraints that stop babies falling out, where as with a sling you need to be aware of your baby's position and careful when you bend down.

  • WeMadeMe Wuti Wrap, £49.99

    Age suitability: Birth to 3 years (3kg - 15kg)

Number of carrying positions: 1 (baby facing inward on mum or dad’s chest)

A relatively new wrap to the market from baby-carrying specialists WeMadeMe, the Wuti wrap is essentially one long piece of woven and stretchy fabric that is tied to create a supportive carrier which keeps baby close to the wearer.

Suitable for newborn (8lbs+) up to 3 years (35lbs or 15kg), it’s targeted in particular at babies up to 9 months old.  Our MFM mum found the Wuti wrap to be a "godsend" after her C-section as it distributed weight evenly across her back and shoulders.

She also said: "I could wear it for long periods of time without any aches or pains.  It was comfortable when I was still in pain following the procedure and, once I was up and about, it left both hands free so I could get on with light chores while baby slept soundly on my chest."

  • Close Caboo Carrier Wrap, £49.95

    Age suitability: Birth to 3 years (3kg - 14.2kg)

Number of carrying positions: 3 (baby facing inward on mum or dad’s chest, baby on back or hip)

The Close Caboo is a sling/carrier amalgamation; the front of it is stretchy fabric like a wrap, while the back straps are harness-style carrier ones that cross over at the back with ring slings.

Versatility-wise it has five carrying positions to accommodate newborn babies through to toddlers, including the foetal position for newborns.

Our MFM mum reviewer commented that the Close Caboo Carrier is soft and comfortable and allows your baby to "sit high up on your chest, while you're free to move around with feeling restricted".

A great feature of this sling is that it can be used with babies as small as 5lbs or 2kg, so its a good bet for most babies from day one. Available in five colours.

  • Lifft Sling, £49.99

    Age suitability: Birth to 3 years (3kg - 15kg)

Number of carrying positions: 2 (baby facing inward on mum or dad’s chest or on the hip)

The Lifft sling was designed by Louise Day, a British mum who tested her product at the Movement Analysis Laboratory of a UK university - a department that specialises in products designed to work with the body.

Our reviewer rated it for being straightforward, comfortable and she loved the simple, yet effective, design.

The Lifft is essentially a large band of material with a sack for your baby to sit in. There are no clips, buckles or fiddly adjustments to be made just find the right size for you and pop baby in, in the front, side, Buddha or breastfeeding position.

In short, our reviewer said that this sling was "brilliant". Available in eight sizes, the only downside is that it can't be adjusted, so unless you and your partner are a similar size only one of you can use it.
