Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream, £2.05

One of the best nappy creams for everyday use and prevention of nappy rash has to be Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream. Sudocrem is a licensed medicine and it soothes, heals and protects. While it’s clinically proven to help nappy rash heal, our MFM reviewer has found - after testing in on all three daughters – that it’s her favourite nappy rash ‘preventer’. Great value for money, too.

Simple Baby moisture and care wipes, £1.36 for 80

Simple Baby moisture and care wipes are very gentle and mild, and an ideal choice for super sensitive young skin. These wipes are paediatrician and dermatologist approved, hypoallergenic, ph balanced and free from colour and perfume. These moist wipes scored top marks for robustness and can cope with a thorough bottom clean.

MFM mums also loved how gentle yet effective the Simple Baby moisture and care wipes were on sensitive skin.

Do remember not to worry about using any wipes until your newborn is at least two weeks or older.

Mothercare Smart Nappy system, £39.99 for a starter pack

The Mothercare Smart Nappy system lets you have the choice of using a full reusable nappy (where you wash and reuse the absorbent inner pad), or using a disposable pad for convenience. It’s an innovative system, and a good, affordable intro to reusable nappies. The nappies come in a range of sizes, with the newborn size (4-11lbs/2-5kg) thoughtfully featuring a belly button cut out in the outer plus a two-fold extra absorbent reusable pad, which you can then use as a booster pad in the larger nappy sizes.

bumGenius One Size reusable nappies, £14.75 each

As the name suggests, the bumGenius One Size reusable nappies are one size – they cleverly last from birth to potty by having rows of popper that let you adjust the size. They offer a slimmer fit that some other brands, but the main reason they get big points for little babies is their ability to contain those explosive liquid poos! Our MFM reviewer found bumGenius coped with the damage as well as, if not better than, disposable nappies. They also have special newborn inserts.

Tesco Ultra Soft newborn nappies, £1.66 for 24

Those explosive newborn poos can be pretty lethal, but Tesco Ultra Soft nappies for newborns efficiently and effortlessly handle them. These disposable nappies contain the mess as well as the big-name brands, but offer a budget-friendly option. Snug, absorbent and comfy, these are near perfect.

Sainsbury’s little ones newborn nappies, £1.85 for 24

Absorbent and robust, the budget price of Sainsbury’s little ones newborn nappies certainly isn’t reflected in their performance. These disposable nappies cope with nappy mess easily, locking moisture away from your baby’s skin. They also fit well and can handle wiggly babies.

Huggies Newborn nappies offer a snug fit that’s comfy but able to keep that leaky poo contained. The soft, quilted inner is absorbent and seems to hold a lot. Described as a “great all-rounder” by our MFM reviewer, these hard-working nappies do the job for parents who want to spend extra on a big-name baby brand.
