A car seat is a vital piece of equipment when you become a parent. Probably the longest-lasting tool you’ll use, especially as you have to use a car seat from birth until your child is 135cm tall, which is around 12-years-old.
So, it’s understandable that there’s a lot that goes into developing and making car seats, with safety being the paramount issue.
We saw first-hand what it takes to get a car seat from conception to the shops when we attended Britax Römer’s research and development centre in Leipheim, Germany.
One of the largest manufacturers of child seats in the world, Britax Römer makes 1.2 million child car seats every year.
The brand conducts various safety tests on its products, like the harness whip testing and buckle testing, both filmed below:

And of course, there is the crash testing. Going at speeds of 0 to 50kph in under 2 seconds, the tests simulates the forces and impacts of crashes.
