Everyone loves a glass of bubbly at Christmas. But whether you crack open a bottle or two before the turkey or just keep one on hand to lighten up those tense family moments – you want to make sure your money is getting you the best quality bubbles.

With supermarkets now offering high-quality wines, we put own-brand champagnes to the test from the following: Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose,

It was all done as blind taste testing, so we wouldn’t be swayed by the labels. Well, it’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it!

So where did the big supermarkets come and how did Aldi fare against Waitrose?

  • GOLD WINNER: Asda's Extra Special Louis Bernard Champagne Premier Cru NV, £19.75

    Taste: 4/5

    Bubbles: 3/5

    Colour: 4/5

This champagne is fragrant and fruity with a bit of a kick. It's full-bodied and the oaky depth of flavour makes it taste expensive. The bubbles were big but went down quite quickly.

Depending on who you ask it either smells of socks or cheese – but when it comes to champagne, that's apparently a good thing!

  • SILVER: Sainsbury’s Blanc de Noirs champagne, £20

    Taste: 3/5

    Bubbles: 4/5

    Colour: 3/5

Dry, crisp and bubbly with a smooth taste, this is more like classic champagne. It has good bubbles which some might find too fizzy. An impressive bubbly that would make an admired gift.

  • BRONZE: Lidl Comte de Senneval, £11.99

    Taste: 3/5

    Bubbles: 3/5

    Colour: 4/5

This champagne looks rather posh when poured as it's pale and frothy, but the bubbles did quickly fizzle out. It's not too sweet, has a smooth finish and is certainly very drinkable - and just look at that Lidl price!

  • Waitrose Brut NV, £19.99

    Taste: 3/5

    Bubbles: 2/5

    Colour: 3/5

The light, gentle sweet taste of this champagne makes it very quaffable. Although easy to drink, we found the taste was so light, it fell away quickly. Some reviewers thought this made it a rather bland choice. The bubbles also disappeared quickly.

  • Aldi’s Champagne Veuve Monsigny by Philizot & Fils, £11.99

    Taste: 2/5

    Bubbles: 3/5

    Colour: 3/5

Zingy on the nose, this champagne has a light, sweet and fruity flavour. It smells like peaches and we thought it would be great in Bellinis or champagne cocktails. Like Lidl, it's also got a great price tag.

  • Morrisons M Signature Champagne Brut, £18.99

    Taste: 3/5

    Bubbles: 3/5

    Colour: 3/5

"If you walked into a bar and asked for a glass of bubbly, this is what they'd give you," one of our reviewers said on first taste. This champagne smells sweet and has a crisp finish but is unbalanced with a slightly acidic taste.

  • Tesco finest* Premier Cru NV Champagne, £19.99

    Taste: 2/5

    Bubbles: 2/5

    Colour: 2/5

This champagne is very sweet – even biscuity. It had a strong first-taste with a bitter aftertaste and didn't go down smoothly. This is the one glass we struggled to finish! Well, almost...
