Our review

Hands down, there’s one standout reason why we had to review The Kiddy Evolution Pro 2 car seat for MadeForMums and that’s its innovative lie-flat feature.  We've also reviewed the newer version of Kiddy car seat, the Kiddy Evo-Luna i-Size car seat

This group 0+ car seat gives you the option of lying your baby completely flat when outside of the car - for example, when the car seat is attached to a pushchair as part of a travel system. Alternatively, if your baby falls asleep in the car seat, you can then take baby and seat indoors and let your baby continue to nap in a lie-flat position. As research has shown, the lie-flat position is best for baby’s back and overall development. Find out why newborns need to lie-flat.

The transformation from carrying position to lie-flat happens in one swift move of the handle. Remember, the lie-flat sleeping position on the Evolution Pro 2 can only be used when it's not installed in the car. There's a fail-safe mechanism to prevent you from using the Kiddy Evolution Pro 2 in a reclined position when you fit it in the car.

It’s suitable from birth - with inserts available to buy separately to cater for premature babies - up until 15 months. This seat is rear facing and can be fitted either using the cost-effective option of car seatbelt or the ISOFIX base which comes at an extra cost (RRP £110) to your pocket. Either way both are simple to use.

It comes compatible with the Kiddy Click ’n Move 3 stroller and it’s been designed to fit on the same adaptors as the Maxi Cosi so will be compatible with many other buggies.

What's in the box:

  • Car Seat
  • Head hugger
  • Integrated sun hood
  • Padded shoulder straps and crotch pad

What we loved

The innovative lay flat feature ticks the box. There’s just something extra comforting knowing that your baby is sleeping in a position that helps development. Plus he can do so for longer than the usual recommended 2 hours for newborns in a standard car seat.

It’s perfect for those mummy lunches and extended shopping trips and the space that might have been taken up by the carrycot is now there for shopping bags.

It literally takes a button and a clip down of the handle to take the Evolution Pro 2 from recline to carrying and vice versa. And you need smooth, seamless motion with a sleeping baby. The last thing you need is him waking up with a jolt. During journeys, however, your baby will still have to sleep in the carrying position as the lie-flat feature can only be used out of the car but he/she is unlikely to notice the change.

For me, the attention to detail on safety is also a comfort. A fail-safe mechanism on it means there’s little danger of incorrectly and more importantly unsafely placing your baby in the car in recline position. And if you were in any doubt, which you wouldn’t be, a little danger-warning picture on the side of the seat appears too.

While it comes compatible with the Kiddy Click n’ Move 3see our review here - the real plus is that it uses the same adaptors as the Maxi Cosi so you can use it on a good range of other buggies. I love it when brands give us a choice!

Speaking of which, I love the funky colours/patterns available in this range. The closest you get to colour with most car seats is in the interior, namely the insert and/or padding. But what’s great about the Evolution Pro 2 is the outer shell comes with colour and stylishly matching or clashing interior – you chose.

Cranberry, Sunshine, Jaffa, Zebra are standout colours. My personal favourites are Hawaii – a bright turquoise blue - and Apple – a borderline neon green. They’ve covered all bases so there really is something for everyone.

The large sun canopy works for both in the car and when you’re out and about with the car seat on the Click’ n Move chassis or other compatible buggy.

What to watch out for

The price. At £150 RRP, price-wise this seat is at the higher end of the bracket so it’s good the seat lasts until 15 months. The good news is if you’re lucky or keep persevering or both, you might find it for a little less – the cheapest I found was £135.

You could argue the Evolution Pro 2 is value for money considering it’s innovation and design are at the cutting edge of the market.

The Evolution Pro 2 isn’t the lightest car seat on the market. In fairness it’s the heaviest either. But weighing in at approx. 4.9kg, getting a sleeping 15 month old in his seat sure to take a bit muscle.

MadeForMums verdict

With cutting-edge lie-flat technology that really is a benefit to your baby’s health, the Evolution Pro2 is a great car seat.
