Bebecar is a company that’s been around for 45 years, and is primarily a maker of travel systems, pushchairs and car seats. It prides itself on designing and manufacturing its products in Europe, because it feels this helps it create products of the highest safety standards and quality.

The look and feel of the Bebecar Bobob SPP car seat, a Group 1 car seat, is soft and luxurious, with lots of padding, which is great for baby's comfort. However the Bebecar Bobob SPP car seat unique reclining system, which the manufacturers claim is its unique selling point, is actually one of the major sticking points for me with this seat because it means baby is reclining too far for most every day car journeys.

What we love

The seat itself looks soft and comfortable, and is quite stylish. It looks as though your baby is going to enjoy a nice comfortable journey.

Also once you've mastered fitting it in the car properly it's also quite sturdy so feels as though your baby will be safe in it, which is of course the main objective of any car seat.

What to look out for

The Bebecar Bobob SPP has what the manufacturer describes as a unique adjustment system that allows the seat to easily recline for a relaxed position for longer journeys. And while this seat is easy to recline, my main issue was with its position in both the recline mode and the upright mode.

In short, the upright mode was far from upright. Rather than sitting up straight so Jack could look round and out of the window like any inquisitive 21-month-old would want, the 'upright' position of this seat made him look as though he was sort of folded in half, with his bottom right down and his legs sticking up in the air. He seemed quite happy but it looked like rather a strange position.

To reach the second position you simply pull a lever with or without your baby in the seat and voila! It's reclined. Very reclined. It probably is ideal for long journeys if your baby wants to sleep, so for younger children from 6 months to about 18 months it's probably great. But any older, when sleeping in the car is just not an option, it's much too reclined as it makes it hard for them to see out of the window, or play, or do anything. And while it would be easy to pop them back into the upright position, it's only possible if you have someone else in the car with you as it would be dangerous while you were driving – and I can imagine a little one getting very frustrated stuck in that position once they were awake. Honestly, my son slept fine in a more upright position, but maybe that was just him.

The other thing I didn't like much were the straps, as they tended to get stuck underneath him when I was putting him in the car and I had to fiddle around pulling them out from underneath him before I could do the straps up.

And one more grumble – it wasn't very easy to fix into the car in the first place. It would be one for putting in your car and not taking out very often as it took me a good 10 minutes to get it fixed securely in place. There wasn't much sideways stability either, although the stability forwards and backwards was great.

Who's the Bebecar Bobob SPP car seat best for?

Younger babies going on frequent long journeys.

MadeForMums verdict

While the idea behind the Bebecar Bobob SPP car seat is great, in reality it's not as practical as it sounds. It’s very easy to recline, though more choice of positions, and a seat that's easier to move from car to car would be preferable to some mums. It's also quite expensive.
