Pros

  • Original Kiddy impact shield, shock absorber, high-tech breathable materials, one-hand height and width adjustment, snooze position, three-stage leg extension, durable cover, foldable and removable insert cushion and integrated diagonal seat belt guide

Cons

  • Original Kiddy impact shield isn't to every child's liking

Kiddy car seats are unique. You only have to look at the innovative impact shield they use instead of a harness as evidence. So, I was interested to see how I’d get on with the Kiddy Guardianfix Pro 2, the newest addition to the Guardian product line.

My daughter recently turned four so I used the car seat as a stage 2 set-up with a seat-belt. I was pleased about this as I know the impact shield used in stage 1 is a little like marmite for some children.

Immediately, the Guardianfix Pro 2 is easy to like as it looks fantastic. The Rumba colours (red and black) are sporty, classic and smart, the curved contours of the seat look inviting and, with a newly-designed side impact protection system to support your child’s head, it begins to look like a seat you’d invest in.

There’s a one-hand adjustment system that expands the seat’s height and width simultaneously and the snooze recline on the seat is perfect for long journeys.

But, now on to the important matter of safety. Apart from the innovative side impact protection system, there are Kiddy Shock absorbers hidden in the seat, which reduce impact energy on the belt. In German tests, this meant the Guardianfix Pro 2 performed 41% better than its predecessor, the Guardianfix Pro. The Pro 2 also has Isofix to give you reassurance when fitting the seat.

The breathable covers can be washed on a delicate cycle, there’s a three-stage leg extension and a foldable and removable insert cushion. Phew!

What we loved

When I picked up the Kiddy Guardianfix Pro 2 car seat, apart from being impressed at how light it was, I knew it was a quality product. Padded and comfortable, it also looked the part.

As soon as I put my daughter Tippi in, she relaxed. The seat almost hugged her, putting my mind at ease. I was slightly concerned she might find the headrest a little claustrophobic, but she didn’t seem to mind at all, and it certainly looks like it would protect her in the event of a collision.

I was also pleased with the snooze recline. It may not recline as much as her previous seat, but it’s enough for Tippi to have a little nap on a long journey.

The Guardianfix Pro 2 was easy to install and light to move around. And, the one-hand expander mechanism makes adjusting straps a thing of the past – great for a car seat due to last your child until they’re 12!

Finally, it looks amazing. The contoured, padded fabric and sporty colours make this seat appear premium, and from what I have tested so far, that’s certainly what it seems to be.

What to watch out for

If you’re using the Guardianfix Pro 2 as a stage 1 seat let your child try it first. The impact shield isn’t to every child’s liking.

I was slightly concerned about a safety issue I came across when researching the car seat, but this was in connection with the original Guardianfix Pro. This has now been rectified with the Guardianfix Pro 2, which has performed excellently in safety tests.

Who is this car seat best for?

Parents who favour style, substance, safety and simplicity.
