Pros

  • Very easy to use, easy to transfer sleeping baby, dads love it

Cons

  • Not suitable for very small babies, heavy on the shoulders as your baby gets bigger

Now produced in a new range of bright, funky colours (the Spirit collection) as well as its traditional black and navy (Classic), the Baby Björn Original Carrier is a favourite among mums, dads and celebrities. The secret – it’s the great design features that make wearing one such a joy.

With an estimated 25 million baby carriers sold in over 40 countries globally, Baby Björn leads the way in this market. Celebrating 35 years of production, BabyBjörn developed its first carrier to allow close bonding with your baby, and the design continues to be refined with input from parents and expert pediatricians.

Its unique easy on/off design is very quick and simple - all adjustments are done at the front and with one quick pull of the straps. This makes it really easy to put on over different thicknesses of clothing or to adjust it to fit dad.

The sleek design is a hit with mums and dads and the two piece solution means you can lay your baby down if it falls asleep (and let’s face it, one of the best thing about slings and carriers is the instant snooze effect).

Its closest rivals are the Ergobaby 360, the Britot carrier and the Mountain Buggy Juno Carrier.

What we love

Having spent the first few weeks of new motherhood struggling with the poor design of a cheaper model baby carrier, the Baby Björn was a fabulous discovery. I feared it was going to be over hyped – that I’d be paying the extra money because Angelina Jolie had one. But the simple mechanism for clipping your baby into the carrier is brilliant. And once inside, baby Noah is instantly happy.

It’s also much more comfortable than several other baby carriers I’ve tried. And although Noah does stir slightly when I pull the larger of the clips out to unhook him, it’s possible nine times out of 10 to transfer a sleeping babe to the cot without waking him.

Dads love it – but not just for the design. I have a few male friends who brazenly admit the Baby Bjorn is a complete ‘chick magnet’. Men!

What to watch out for

The biggest problem to me as a mum of two is that by about four months old, I found the weight of my baby started to put pressure on my shoulders. My partner didn't feel it but for me my shoulders felt the strain after about 20 minutes. With my first baby I was ready to move onto my buggy full time by this stage but with two you have to rely on carriers and slings more often for racing around after an active toddler. You may want to try the more expensive back support system in the Baby Björn Synergy instead if you want use a carrier for long walks with an older baby.

And although it comes pediatrician recommended and suitable for babies from about 8lbs, a tiny newborn does feel a little lost in the carrier. Noah was 8lb 4oz at birth, but I felt he looked more secure and comfortable in a fiddly-to-tie fabric sling for the first month.

MadeForMums verdict

Great baby carrier that lives up to its reputation. So easy to use and brilliantly designed, although I found not so comfy for carrying older babies for a longer length of time.
