Pros

  • High-sensitivity microphone, accurate temperature display, good range

Cons

  • Baby unit cord too long, on/off button difficult to operate on parent unit

If you’re looking for a good basic digital audio baby monitor that won’t break the bank, the Motorola Digital Baby Monitor MBP 16 is worth considering. However, it would be handy if the lullabies could be controlled from the parent unit.

As you would expect from a telecommunications company, the Motorola Digital Baby Monitor MBP 16’s wireless technology is high quality and has an expected range of 300m. Along with a high-sensitivity microphone, Motorola claims you’ll hear every peep.

The parent unit has a rechargeable battery so you can unplug and roam the house without missing a sound, and a low battery alert will let you know when it needs charging again. With a room temperature display and alerts for being too hot or cold, two-way communication, a night-light, five lullabies, sound level indicators and even a belt clip for portability, you certainly get your money’s worth.

What we love

On the list of things to buy for your baby a monitor rates pretty high, but prices can be high too, especially if you buy an all-singing, all-dancing one. What I love about the Motorola Digital Baby Monitor MBP 16 is that it offers you the main functions you’d need in a monitor and a little more, at a very reasonable price.

The fact that it’s produced by Motorola means the technology is of high quality, there’s a good range and - from what I have experienced – no interference. The sound is very good. The small high-sensitivity microphone protruding from the monitor does work, but you need to make sure the sound level on your parent unit is switched on. I heard Heidi loud and clear when she was coughing through the night, which was good as I could tell she wasn’t fully awake so I didn’t have to go in and check on her.

The monitor is simple to use with self-explanatory instructions, and the directions on the parent unit itself are easy to follow.

The slimline curved parent unit is pleasing to hold and easy on the eye.

It’s a small thing, but something that resonates highly with me - the temperature display is actually very accurate. I find this isn’t the case with many monitors. As a mum who constantly worries whether her children’s rooms are too hot or cold this is particularly important.

What to watch out for

I found the on/off button on the parent unit frustrating as I couldn’t seem to turn it off, even after holding it down for about 10 seconds. In the end I had to take the battery out.

The cord on the baby unit is also very long, and there’s nowhere on the monitor to wind it up safely. As it’s in the baby’s bedroom this is a concern for me, especially knowing my daughter Heidi’s fascination with anything that lights up and has buttons. That said, this could be secured with a plastic tie.

If I’m being fussy, you can’t operate the lullabies from the parent unit, which would be useful. If your child wakes you will need to go into their room to put the songs on.

Who is the Motorola Digital Baby Monitor MBP 16 best for?

Parents looking for a basic monitor that does a good job without blowing the budget.

The Motorola Digital Baby Monitor MBP 16 offers all the major functions you’d need and a little more, including lullabies, two-way talkback, sound, temperature and out-of-range alerts. The baby unit cord is too long but this can be shortened with a plastic tie.
