Pros

  • Excellent picture, interference-free, ability to watch and record your baby's actions wherever you are in the world

Cons

  • Room temperature out by 5/6 degrees, too many functions if you like simplicity

If you are a mum (or dad) who loves gadgets, you’ll love Samsung’s new baby monitor – the SEW-3035 SecureView Digital Video Monitor. It seems only minutes ago Samsung launched the SEW-3030, but with new functions like SD recording and the ability to watch your child through Skype wherever you are in the world, it’s a welcome addition.

For ultimate peace of mind, the Samsung SEW-3035 SecureView Digital Video Monitor is one sophisticated piece of kit.

The stunning white parent unit has a 3.5” colour LCD video screen that projects a perfect picture with a 100m range and, thanks to the latest digital wireless technology, no interference. It has a 2 x digital zoom for a closer look at your sleeping baby, a great little nightlight, built-in room thermometer, an eco power-save mode, a two-way talkback function and the ability to connect up to four cameras!

Now, as if that wasn’t enough, Samsung has gone that one step further. Not only can you watch your baby there and then as they sleep in their cot, but you can also watch them later. With an SD recording function, you just need to insert your SD card and save all the camera’s recorded video and images for later. And, if family and friends want to join in, or you’re away from home, you can view them from anywhere in the world via Skype or MSN.

What we love

As with many of Samsung’s products, the SEW-3035 monitor is stunning to look at. A stylish, chic white monitor that wouldn’t look out of place in any modern home, even the box it came in was premium quality.

The image quality is perfect, and I could see my baby Heidi so clearly it had me hooked. And, if you need an even closer look there’s a zoom function, which means there’s absolutely no need to go in and check your baby and risk waking them up.

Now, the really clever bit - if you buy an SD card, you can slot it into the monitor and record all of your baby’s actions, whether they’re sleeping or babbling to themselves, as I caught Heidi doing the other night. It’s these moments that are wonderful to catch on screen. You can even set it so that the monitor starts recording every time your baby moves, meaning you can catch anything interesting that happens, or watch back what happened if your baby started crying. It’s really very handy! If you love your social network sites, it is so easy to upload your images and video for family and friends to join in the fun.

With the ability to watch your baby through Skype or MSN, you’re provided with some much-needed reassurance when you’re away from home. Although I’ve no need for this function, I can see how this would be very useful for a partner who was away or members of a family that live abroad.

Samsung has, in many ways, created the ultimate monitor.

What to watch out for

Although I think this is a great product, I personally found it a bit too clever. I wouldn’t use a couple of the main functions it provides so couldn’t justify the price.

The monitor is very sensitive, which is a good thing, but as it picks up any slight movement you can find it vibrates and beeps constantly. You can rectify this by adjusting the sensitivity on the camera, but I think it could be made slightly simpler.

I found the thermometer reading quite different to others in the house, so you might not want to rely solely on this to check the temperature of your baby’s room.
