Suitable from 4 months of age, the Tommee Tippee First Cup is great for taking out and about, without the risk of spills or leaks.

The Tommee Tippee First Cup is one of Britain's bestsellers, and it's easy to see why it's such a favourite with mums everywhere. Its secure lid means it won't leak in your bag, the free-flow spout is recommended by health visitors, it comes in a range of bright colours and it's cheap enough to buy to several to have on the go.

The Tommee Tippee First Cup is a great compromise. It's not as messy as an open cup, but the free-flowing spout, which features two tiny holes, isn't completely non-spill. Typical non-spill sippy cups have been associated with tooth decay. You can also fit it with a Sipper Lid (sold separately), as an intermediate stage before progressing onto using it as an open cup.

What we loved

The Tommee Tippee First Cup has a nice simple design, with a secure removable lid and small flip-up spout that folds flat. This means you can pop it into your changing bag without fear of spills, so it's ideal for when you're out and about. It's dishwasher friendly and suitable for all kinds of sterilisation.

The cup has two handles that are very easy for little hands to grab. Baby feeding experts Tommee Tippee really have thought of everything – it's calibrated in mls on the side so you can tell how much liquid you've poured in, and even has a juice line. This means you can dilute your little one's drink in the 1:10 proportions recommended for healthy teeth.

The Tommee Tippee First Cup is my 1-year-old's main cup, he uses it every day and he loves it (in fact, he's always grabbing other babies cups whenever he spots them on his travels). He's been drinking confidently from it for months (you can use it from age 4 months).

What to watch out for

The lid has a good tight fit, but it can also be a little stiff to remove. If the cup is quite full, when you pop the lid on you can occasionally get liquid spurted into your eye if the spout isn't down!

Some mums also report finding the Tommee Tippee First Cup a little on the large side for small babies, and quite heavy when full. But these are minor quibbles. As a first cup, it really is hard to fault. Unless, of course, you prefer a completely non-spill cup.

Who is the Tommee Tippee First Cup best for?

Mums after a free-flow first cup that's great for travel and easy to hold.

MadeForMums verdict

The Tommee Tippee First Cup truly is one of those classic products you buy then wonder how you lived without it. No wonder it's clocked up so many awards. It has a pleasingly simple design, is easy for your baby to drink from, and a doddle to keep clean. The only minor irritant is the tight-fitting lid, but that also stops it leaking.
