Jané Move Travel Highchair review

The Jané Move Travel Highchair is manufactured out of tough, resilient polypropylene and works like a miniature version of a classic folding dining chair. It folds flat for travel, and opens out by a simple pulling action, locking in place with a plastic flange.

A 3-point harness secures your baby in place, and the chair has its own tray, which can be removed to allow the seat to be pulled right into a dining table so you baby can join in with family meals.

The seat is padded, but as this is aimed at the travel highchair market, it’s a fairly minimalist seat with a low back, unlike some of the more luxurious padded armchairs seen in the non-travel highchair sector.

What we love

Jané Move Travel Highchair has been designed robustly with travel in mind. You could put this up and down thousands of times and fling it into and out of the car with gay abandon before you’re able to do much damage to its seemingly bullet-proof (never mind baby-proof) structure.

As well as being strong, it’s a simple design, and without reading the instructions, I was quickly able to strap in my daughter, Tirion, 7 months.

Well, what a result! Tirion loved having her own "chair". Despite her name meaning "gentle" in Welsh, she is, shall we say, a robust little girl. When she was straining forward against the harness I worried that she might tip the chair, given that it was not tethered to a seat the way it should be when in use as intended, but it proved very stable and didn’t budge despite the best efforts of her 20lb bulk.

I did think at this stage however, that a level floor was one thing, but chairs come in all shapes and sizes and often don't have level seating areas, so I set about putting the Jané Move well and truly through its paces.

My husband, a lecturer in design, has a thing about chairs and has collected several classics, of varying shapes and sizes. Most of these don’t have level sitting surfaces, such as the Eames Eiffel chair (a moulded plastic seat with a dip where your bum goes) and a Thone (loved by bistros the world over, with a small padded cushion where your bum goes). My initial concerns that neither of these chairs would provide a stable, secure base for the Jané Move Travel Highchair proved completely unfounded. Once the securing straps were done up tightly the highchair was rock-steady, and could be pulled right up to the table so that Tirion felt she was completely involved in tea-time.

What to watch out for

There are some seat types that just aren’t suitable. Our local pub, for example has church pew seating, and this leaves nowhere to secure the straps. The same goes for the picnic bench in the garden. But these are minor quibbles.

As a travel high chair, the Jané Move Travel Highchair is somewhere in the grey area of transportable. Compared to most highchairs it’s small and light and easy to transport. And although it does come with a bag with a shoulder strap I’d be unlikely to want to carry it any great distance on foot – its just that little bit too bulky, although it does come with us if we’re in the car.

The Jané Move Travel Highchair is a sturdy, well-built piece of kit that would last through several siblings. Very useful for travel and visiting if you’re traveling by car. A bit large to want to carry too far on foot, but it’s head and shoulders in looks and effectiveness above most other travel highchairs on the market.
