In a nutshell

Too light to provide much relief during the early stages of breastfeeding, but a good option for soothing sore nipples once feeding is established.

Pros

  • Light and refreshing, sinks into the skin easily with little residue, no need to wash off before feeding, a good value buy

Cons

  • Not thick enough to protect very sore nipples, slightly musty fragrance, needs applying more frequently than stated

If you’re planning to breastfeed, a decent nipple cream is a must to get you through those toe-curling early weeks as your nipples toughen up. Mothercare’s It’s Your Body nipple cream is light and soothing, but doesn’t offer the barrier effect you might need when just getting started.

Containing vitamin E and olive oil, It’s Your Body nipple cream is part of Mothercare’s new range of maternity and post-pregnancy toiletries. It’s fragrance-free, dermatologically tested, hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin. It comes in a handy squeezy tube, and promises to help soothe and protect sore nipples.

What we love

While some nipple creams are thick and sticky, Mothercare It’s Your Body nipple cream feels light, cool and refreshing to apply – more like a moisturiser than a barrier cream. Once breastfeeding was established and my nipples had got used to baby Katie’s vampire latch, I found it pleasantly soothing.

It’s Your Body nipple cream sinks into the skin quickly, with little residue to rub off on your clothes, and doesn’t need washing off before breastfeeding, so there was nothing to keep my hungry baby waiting when she woke for a feed. It’s also well priced at £4.99 for a generous 75ml tube.

What to watch out for

I first tried Mothercare It’s Your Body nipple cream just days after giving birth to Katie, when my nipples were particularly tender. While it was soothing to apply, I found it too light to provide the barrier effect I needed when my baby latched on. The tube states that it need only be applied once or twice a day, but to get any sort of relief, I needed to use it after every feed.

Although it’s fragrance-free, the cream had a faint musty smell, which wasn’t very appealing, especially when it rubbed off on Katie’s face!

Who is Mothercare It’s Your Body nipple cream best for?

Mums who have got breastfeeding established and just need occasional light relief.

MadeForMums verdict

Mothercare It’s Your Body nipple cream may not be heavy duty enough to see you through the painful early days of breastfeeding, but it is light, refreshing and soothing once your nipples have toughened up. A good buy once breastfeeding is established.
