The Philips AVENT Microwave Steam Steriliser not only looks nicer and holds more bottles than others on the market, it does the job - and fast! Holding six bottles or two breast pumps it works in just 2-6 minutes, depending on the power of your microwave. It's 2 minutes in 1100-1850w microwave, 4 minutes in 850-1000w microwave, 6 minutes in 500-850w microwave. Just add 200ml of water to the base and heat. The bottles are then sterile for 24 hours with the lid intact, and if you do need to re-sterilise it doesn’t take long.

There’s no need to clean it with citric acid every 2-4 weeks like the electric one - simply put it in the dishwasher and when you’re not using it, or store it in the microwave. The steriliser is also lightweight enough for travel. Just make sure the place you’re traveling to has a microwave!

What we love

This is definitely one of my best buys since giving birth to my daughter, Tippi. I bottlefeed exclusively and am very reliant on a steriliser. When my electric one broke, as I was on my way out for a much-needed coffee, I was close to a mini-meltdown. Now I’m so glad it happened because I found this great product. At least if my microwave breaks I can ask a helpful neighbour to borrow theirs for 6 minutes. And taking just 6 minutes is a small miracle compared to the length of time an electric one can take.

Even though the steriliser looks good, it’s great that I can hide it in the microwave until I need it again. No more bulky electric steriliser sitting on my worktop.

I was concerned a microwave steriliser wouldn’t be as effective as an electric one, but it’s just as good. And, returning home to find out the steriliser hasn’t been on is no longer a problem because a clean bottle is just 2-6 minutes away. This product saved me some very precious new-mum time. It’s great value for money and I wish I’d bought it from the beginning!

What to watch out for

Removing the steriliser from the microwave can prove tricky. The part you hold is hard to grasp and boiling water can seep out.

Open the lid away from you. There is a LOT of steam and pulled the wrong way, it can leave you rather red-faced.

Who is the Philips AVENT Microwave Steam Steriliser best for?

Mums pushed for time, who exclusively bottlefeed or who travel.

MadeForMums verdict

A great little product, which can make a big difference to a hectic mum’s life. It’s speedy, convenient, lightweight, easy to transport, value for money and invaluable in those moments when you need a bottle – and quick! Just be careful when opening it as - surprise, surprise - it can be very steamy.
