Pros

  • Really attractive designs, great idea to have velcro side opening, price is similar to others on the market.

Cons

  • Fabric shows signs of wear quite quickly, no velcro on the girls' version.

The John Lewis baby and toddler swim nappy does what it says on the tin, which is contain nasties and look cute at the same time. The fact that these are fully washable and reusable means not only are they eco-friendly, they're economical, too.

It’s basically a washable swim nappy that can be used in the pool or in the sea. It’s lined with a protective layer to stop any mishaps. The prints used in the nappies, which come in boys’ and girls’ versions, coordinate with the rest of the John Lewis swimwear range.

What we love

It’s much cheaper to buy a reusable swim nappy than to use disposables, plus it is more eco-friendly. The John Lewis design is really attractive, whereas some of the other makes I looked at were quite horrible. The John Lewis nappy has elasticated legs and waist, and you put it on like a pair of knickers. Martha has really chunky thighs, but the elastic is not too tight. This summer, John Lewis is trialling the use of Velcro fastening at the sides, so it’s easier to get the nappy on and off a wet baby.

What to watch out for

I bought the nappy for Martha with the laudable aim of taking her and her sisters swimming once a fortnight. I’ve had the nappy six months and we’ve been twice – so you may find your investment goes to waste! The Velcro trial is only available in the boys’ version of the nappy – and although it’s a good idea for the reasons given above, there’s also the possibility that it will make it much easier for the children to take the nappy off themselves, quite likely at completely the wrong moment! The fabric on Martha’s nappy has already started to pill.

Who is the John Lewis swim nappy best for?

Mums who like taking their baby swimming.

MadeForMums verdict

A reusable swim nappy is a must for holidays and trips to the pool. The designs are cute but the nappy does start to look worn quite quickly.
