Pros

  • Deceases chance of getting stretchmarks and the severity of them, smells great, absorbs quickly, feels great after application

Cons

  • Expensive

Boasting that it’s clinically proven to reduce your chances of getting stretchmarks, SilDerm Stretch Mark Prevention Oil (also called SilDerm Stretch Mark Massage Oil), feels gorgeous to use but is expensive.

With this stretchmark oil, prevention really is better than cure - SilDerm Stretch Mark Prevention Oil works by telling the skin cells to start the healing process before the stretchmarks have taken hold.

Developed by scientists, under stringent clinical conditions, SilDerm’s manufacturers are in no doubt of how effective it is. Maybe that’s down to two of its ingredients - Gotu Kola, a plant extract that stimulates fibrolast cells to produce collagen, and Tocopherol, natural vitamin E, a strong antioxidant that helps prevent tissue damage.

In some marketing, SilDerm says “clinically proven to prevent stretchmarks” and in other places, the claim is that SilDerm is clinically proven "to reduce your chances" of getting stretchmarks and the severity of them, which is a little confusing. SilDerm says stretchmarks “are never 100% preventable”, so using this oil still shouldn’t be seen as a guarantee of a stretchmark-free pregnancy.

At 23 weeks of pregnancy (my second) and with my belly growing rapidly, I was only too eager to get hold of a bottle and try it out.

What we love

My bump has grown quickly just as it did in my first pregnancy and from very early on I could feel my skin stretching; at times my lower back has itched terribly. So far, SilDerm Stretch Mark Prevention Oil appears to have worked for me.

I have used the oil all over my bump, boobs, thighs, bottom and lower back. It absorbs quickly, feels fabulous and smells even better. Indeed, the hit of lavender you get is really quite sensual. It’s particularly nice to use just prior to bed for its aroma is so relaxing.

What is great to know is that all ingredients have been screened for use in pregnancy (as well as when breastfeeding), so it is a reassuringly safe product to use.

What to watch out for

Unfortunately, after a few weeks of use the spray nozzle became clogged. I took the top off and ran it under the hot tap to try and clear it, but it was completely blocked. In the end I had to untwist the top and remove it all together to use the oil. This wasn’t such a big deal as the SilDerm bottle sprayed out such a tiny amount, I felt as though I needed rather a lot of pump action to feel like I had a sufficient coverage, so you may just want to take the nozzle off anyway.

SilDerm is only available to purchase online through SilDerm’s website. It is priced at the high end of the market, with 120ml costing £34.95

Who is the SilDerm Stretch Mark Prevention Oil best for?

Mums-to-be willing to pay top price to prevent stretchmarks.

MadeForMums verdict

SilDerm Stretch Mark Prevention Oil absorbs well, smells delicious and feels gorgeous. However, it’s a shame that such an apparently effective oil should be so pricey - it would be great if such a fabulous product could be available to suit more budgets.
