In a nutshell

A cute budget stroller for short or occasional outings, but you may find the harness size isn't suitable for older children.

Pros

  • Lightweight, flat/compact when folded, sturdy, minimal assembly

Cons

  • Fiddly folding mechanism, harness straps are small when winter coats are on, minimal padding

Finding a pushchair can be daunting when there’s so many to choose from and you might dismiss Mothercare's Nanu Stroller for its lack of extras. But don't be too hasty - it packs quite a punch for its price tag. A buggy that can be used from birth at just £50? Not many pushchair manufacturers can claim to give you that in today's turbulent times.

The Mothercare name is synonymous with baby care, and this baby retailer has just celebrated its 50th birthday. Thousands of pushchairs have been wheeled out of its stores since it first opened and the Nanu, with its pink or black choice of styling, will appeal to both parents of boys and girls.

While the Nanu doesn't have all the latest mod cons you may have come to expect from pushchairs sold today, it comes with a weathershield, shopping basket, carry handle, calf- and footrest and hood. This means it’s perfect for a trip to the duck pond with grandma, though you wouldn't want to be shopping for hours on a brisk winter's day. That said, a blanket tucked in would fix that. Also, if you have a newborn, the Nanu is fine for the odd outing, as it does lie flat, but I wouldn't recommend it replace a sturdier pram or from-birth buggy.

I test-drove the Nanu Stroller with my 2 year-old son Nathaniel.

What we love

If you're a butterfingers when it comes to DIY, you'll love the Mothercare Nanu. Assembly simply involved pushing in the two front wheels.

Pushing the Nanu is fairly easy. I wouldn't say it's the smoothest or easiest ride available, but it does the job and handles kerbs fairly well. As the wheels are small, watch coming down kerbs rather than going up them.

The Nanu is by far the lightest pushchair I’ve tested recently (though not the lightest on the market) and has a sturdy carry handle to help you once it’s folded. I find it’s perfect to pick up and hold Nathaniel's hand as we walk into the house together.

Although the Nanu is quite long, it folds down incredible flat, so you shouldn’t have to worry about storing it or whether it will fit in your car.

What to watch out for

I’ve trouble getting the harness to fit around Nathaniel when he has his winter coat on - so much so that he started to feel quite uncomfortable! The buggy’s suitable up to 15kg, which is no different to his normal buggy, but given this harness issue, the Nanu may not last you much passed 2 years 6 months.

As the backrest has a lie-flat recline position, the buggy is marketed as suitable from birth, and on the odd occasion this would be fine. However, as there’s a lack of padding around the head area, I wouldn't make this my only pushchair purchase, but rather have it as an extra buggy.

The Nanu doesn't come with a bumper bar, footmuff or padding on the harness, so be prepared for the fact this is quite a basic design. However, you aren’t really paying for much and it does come with a weathershield.

Who is the Mothercare Nanu Stroller best for?

Parents after a budget-minded spare to leave with grandma.

MadeForMums verdict

The Nanu is a sturdy, lightweight buggy with substance, but it doesn't have the longevity of other pushchairs or accessories, as reflected in the price.
