In a nutshell

An attractive, lightweight pushchair. It's easy to manoeuvre, fold and store away, but always be careful not to overload it with too much shopping

Available in three funky colours, the Silver Cross Fizz is an ultra lightweight, stylish pushchair that provides comfort for your baby or toddler even in the heat.

British company Silver Cross is the manufacturer of traditional prams, and more recently innovative travel systems and pushchairs. The Fizz, produced in 2008, is an ultra-lightweight pushchair weighing around the 5kg mark. It comes without the wheels or hood attached, but the set-up is easy.

Silver Cross has given a lot of consideration your baby’s comfort, despite it being a lightweight model. It comes with a recline strap that’s easy to do even when your little one is seated. However, it doesn’t recline particularly far. Your baby is held in place with a 5-point harness – which closes with plastic clips into a plastic circular disk. The break is on the rear wheels and you feel it click when it’s in place, which is reassuring.

The Fizz also has a (small) shopping basket underneath, a useful pouch in the hood and comes with a UVF 50+ sunhood, rain cover and removable carry strap.

An added benefit when you purchase the Fizz is that Silver Cross will donate £5 to The Meningitis Trust.

What we love

The best feature is the removable and reversible seat pad. Not only does this make it easy to clean off the inevitable stockpile of squashed raisins, but your little one is also able to sit directly on the ventilated mesh seat - great during hotter weather.

Despite being so lightweight, the Silver Cross Fizz feels sturdy and robust. The size and swivel of the wheels combined with the position of the handles make it ergonomic to push and you don’t feel shudders up your arm. It also easy to manoeuvre.

It’s easy to put up and collapse, even with just one hand and it can be folded up to a tiny 29cm by 22cm by 105cm. I’ve certainly found it easy to keep in my car boot and it’s great for nipping on and off the bus.

There’s good support for your little one’s calves – even if their legs are quite long. The recline is just enough ensure they don’t slump, which is an unusual feature in a lightweight pushchair.

I like the discrete pouch in the pushchair hood, because it’s big enough to hold your essentials such as purse, keys and phone, but is not an obvious pocket enabling others to spot your valuables. For the amount of functionality it provides, the Fizz seems reasonably priced compared with other pushchairs.

What to watch out for

The closing mechanism on the harness - although funky to look at - is a bit fiddly. I assume Silver Cross wanted to design something different from the traditional 5-point-harness clips but that’s what most of us mums are used to, so it’s therefore not as intuitive to use. It’s particularly difficult if your little one is the wriggly type or you are in a hurry. The harness shoulder straps are also quite easy for a toddler to push off, but even just the waist part of the harness securely holds my big bruiser Peter, so it's not a huge issue.

The basket under the pushchair is also quite small – but this isn’t uncommon in most lightweight strollers. Since it’s a lightweight pushchair, you do need to be very careful about how much shopping you hang off the handles, or else it can tip over. Also, on the model O tested, the handlebars were light grey, so do mark very easily and I wonder how well they’ll wear.

Who is the Silver Cross Fizz best for?

Mums frequently nipping out and about (or on holidays) who don’t need to carry too much shopping.

MadeForMums Verdict

The Silver Cross Fizz is an attractive, stylish, lightweight pushchair that’s easy to manoeuvre, fold and store away. You need to be careful not to overload it, but that’s the usual compromise you’ll make when choosing a lightweight model. The Fizz is comfortable for your little one as well as the person doing the pushing and comes with a number of useful features. While the harness can be awkward to close, this doesn’t significantly detract from the overall product.
