The Joolz Day is a super chic, ergonomic pushchair with an air of continental cool. It’s a refreshing addition to the buggy market but with a high price tag, it won’t appeal to everyone.

For the last three years, Dutch company Joolz has sold its Day pushchair through Mamas & Papas shops. Now Joolz is going it alone, selling only through independent stores, with the tagline ‘Dutch Ergonomicz’.

Based around the idea that “a pushchair should adjust to you – and not the other way around”, the Joolz Day is a three-in-one pram, pushchair and potential travel system, suitable from birth to around 4 years.

The ‘ergonomicz’ bit means that the pushchair has been designed to fit the human body. As a result, the seat and carrycot are higher than usual to stop you stooping over when you lift your child in and out.

Other features designed to make using the Day easier and make it kinder on your baby’s body include the hypo-allergenic mattress in the carrycot that can be used for overnight sleeping and the adjustable footrest, which supports little legs as they grow.

Four-wheel suspension ensures a smooth ride, especially when you’re around town and up and down pavements, and the seat is forward and parent facing. You can also expect a 5-point harness, one-hand operated bumper bar and lockable front swivel wheels.

The Joolz Day is available with silver or black chassis with six fabric colours (Red, Jeans, White, Silver, Sand, Anthracite). A range of accessories is available in matching fabric, such as a footmuff/sleeping bag, nursery bag, parasol, and car seat adaptors for Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix, Maxi-Cosi Pebble and Cybex Aton car seats.

What we love

Joolz makes a lot of claims about its product. But after testing the Day with Minnie, 2, and Poppy, 9 months, I can safely say that it’s not all hot air.

This is a good-looking pushchair - there are no shouty logos, no look-at-me colour schemes and there is no way-out-design. It’s understated, very vogue - the leather handlebar adds a touch of class and I love the black chassis option.

The seat height really did make it easy to get my girls in and out of the buggy, especially Poppy who is prone to worm-like squirming when she is made to get in her current buggy.

Many of the other ergonomic features, like the adjustable footrest and adjustable handle, are found on other buggies. But the ability to lock the front wheels with your foot, rather than scrabble around at ground level, is a great idea.

Being able to use the carrycot as an overnight sleeper without having to buy a separate mattress or stand (it has four feet to lift it off the ground), is a big plus point. Poppy had outgrown its use, but at 9 months she still lay in it comfortably (until she sat up).

The most forward-thinking feature has to be the Joolz Day’s ability to stay upright! The centre of gravity of this pushchair is at the back of the chassis, rather than in the middle. If you’ve ever loaded your buggy with shopping bags and seen it tip backwards, you’ll understand why this is good news for mums. What’s more, because the buggy won’t tip up if you add weight to the back, there’s a hook-on shopping basket capable of carrying 15kg that can be fixed onto the back of the buggy. This makes up for the very small shopping basket attached to the chassis, although it does cost extra.

The folding mechanism is straightforward and effective and even the cup holder swings on a pivot to stop your coffee from spilling out when you go up a kerb.

What to watch out for

It’s hard to find many faults with this pushchair, other than the high price tag, which is to be expected with something so good.

The folding mechanism may frustrate some mums - it can’t be folded one-handed with a wriggly baby in arms. And the claim that the sun hood has a ‘quiet close’ may be a little far fetched – I definitely heard a loud click.

Like many upmarket brands the accessories are expensive – the footmuff/sleeping bag costs £69.

Who is the Joolz Day buggy best for?

New parents with cash to splash on a clever, stylish pushchair.

MadeForMums Verdict

A super-stylish travel system compatible buggy from an innovative company, the Joolz Day does what it says on the tin. With only a few flaws, this is as close to perfect as it comes. But like all good things, it comes at a high price.
