In a nutshell

A stylish choice from a trusted high-street brand, the Movix is a well-designed modern buggy. It handles well on or off road and can used forward or rear facing but could be more robust.

Pros

Cons

  • Could be more robust, small shopping basket, expensive

The Mothercare Movix is a travel system compatible pram and pushchair. Forward and rear facing, it gives a comfortable, stylish ride. And with up to 50 colour combinations to choose from, the Movix is certainly a flexible option. But it won’t be within everyone’s budget and there are a couple of niggles.

If you’re familiar with the Mothercare MyChoice range of buggies, you’ll recognise some features of the Movix. The chassis is similar to its sibling but with a moulded airflow seat, pick-and-mix colour themes and slick black chassis, Mothercare has taken a step into the world of designer buggies.

This three-part system includes the chassis, with two large inflatable rear wheels and two smaller lockable swivel front wheels, seat unit and separate carrycot.

Reversing the seat and attaching the carrycot, or a car seat, is so simple - just push the buttons at the side of the chassis and pull up to release or push down to secure. And whilst the four-stage folding system does take getting used to (there are handy numbers to guide you), it does mean that the chassis folds very flat, although only without the seat unit or carrycot attached.

There’s a foot-operated push-on/push-off brake, centred underneath the seat unit, and the 5-point seat harness has a super secure buckle with height adjustable shoulder straps – to adjust the height just push the straps out through holes in the seat and move up or down. As a pushchair, it weighs 11.9kg (chassis + seat), in pram-mode, it weighs 13.5kg (chassis + carrycot).

The USP of the Movix is the ability to create your own colour-themed buggy. Once you’ve chosen your ‘base pack’ colour for the seat unit and carrycot base, you add a ‘necessity pack’ (seat pad, hood, apron, harness pads and raincover) and then a ‘comfort pack’ (footmuff and change bag) in a choice of five colours (cherry pop, citrus punch, ebony, hazelnut and pebble).

What we love

In terms of design the Movix is certainly up there with the Mamas & Papas Mylo and the Silver Cross Surf. The black chassis is on-the-money and I love the black spokes on the wheels.

The airflow seat gives the Movix a sleek silhouette and comes in a choice of vanilla (light beige) or dark clay (grey). The thick seat pad is spongy and soft, and machine washable. Both Minnie, 2, and Poppy, 1, tested the seat and love being high up. I enjoy the reversible seat direction - having the girls face me, so we can chat, is something I miss on my current forward-facing only pushchair.

The Movix works well both on the pavement and off-road, on the trails. The chunky air-filled tyres absorb the bumps and the four wheels give it stability, although not quite the turn-on-a-sixpence handling of a 3-wheeler buggy.

For those after a travel system, the Movix is compatible with Maxi-Cosi’s CabrioFix and Pebble car seats.

What’s more, the carrycot can be used for occasional overnight sleeping making it truly traveller-friendly. Included with the carrycot is a waterproof mattress with removable fabric cover and a deluxe quilted liner.

What to watch out for

My main issue with the £570 Movix is that it doesn’t feel very solid. Compared to other buggies I have tested, it feels a little hollow. The telescopic handle (great if you’re a tall/short couple) rattles and feels flimsy. This was a problem on my own MyChoice buggy and I’m surprised it hasn’t been resolved.

The closed zip-up shopping basket it a pain to get to, especially when the seat is parent-facing – again something that niggled on the MyChoice and doesn’t seem to have been addressed. What’s more, the basket is quite a small space - there’s no chance of getting a packet of nappies in there.

Who is the Mothercare Movix buggy best for?

Style-conscious parents who want a flexible buggy that’s at the sharp end of design.

MadeForMums verdict

The Mothercare Movix is a sleek, versatile buggy with a huge range of colour options. It’s simple to use, handles well and is easy to fold. It looks great, but isn’t as robust as some of its rivals.
