There shouldn't be any bumps in the night thanks to the Tomy Universal Bedrail, which makes the transition from cot to bed both safe and easy.

Tomy has been around for 80 years, and has it’s brand on everything from toys, games, arts and crafts, to bath toys, night lights, baby monitors and carriers. Tomy’s Nursery Accessories range includes the Universal Bedrail.

Designed to fit all types of beds, the rail brings peace of mind to parents whilst making sure the little ones get a good night sleep, every night.

What we love

While it might take two pairs of hands to assemble, once in place, the rail feels sturdy and secure, so there's no risk of your toddler or child falling out in the middle of the night.

There's added security too, with a childproof lock release that folds the soft white mesh panel down when your child is climbing in and out of bed.

It comes in the choice of two colours - blue and pink – is suitable from 18 months to five years, and folds flat for storage.

After Sam fell out of bed on holiday when a wooden bedside rail didn't hold his weight, I chose carefully and the Tomy Bedside Rail hasn't let either of us down.

What to watch out for

The advertising claims that the Tomy Universal Bedside Rail has special hinges for easy assembly, but putting the rail in place wasn't as simple as Tomy make out. It was tricky to line up the long metal prongs that are designed to hook underneath the mattress and it took two of us to make sure it was securely attached. However, once the rail was ready for Sam to use, I had every confidence there would be no repeats of him falling out and so far, it hasn't failed.

Despite being designed for use on both divan and slatted beds, other mums have said that this bedrail is better suited to divan beds than slatted types, which might be the reason why I found it clumsy to assemble.

Who is the Tomy Universal Bedside Rail best for?

Toddlers moving into a bed for the first time.

MadeForMums verdict

It might not be the easiest to put together, but the Tomy Universal Bedside Rail is a secure and sturdy bed rail. Being able to fold it down to let your child climb in and out of bed is handy. A reassuring way to ease the move to a ‘big bed’.
