MFM's mince pie tasting - the results

MFM HQ has been hard at work (honest!) blind testing supermarket mince pies before you buy. Find out how Asda, Sainsbury's, M&S, Lidl, Waitrose, Aldi and Tesco shaped up

Marks & Spencer Classic All Butter Mince Pies (6 pack), £1.59

Our tasters liked the traditional feel of Marks & Spencer's mince pies, although said they're not very exciting. A good texture and quite sour mincemeat, though, so a good bet if you like a tart-tasting pie.

Score: 3.1/5

Lidl Luxury Mince Pies (6 pack), £1.69

After tasting (a fair few!) of Lidl’s Luxury Mince Pies our tasters felt they were pretty and fruity, but could be quite sickly. A few tasters did mark them out as their favourite though and they were the runner up, so if you're only likely to have one or two and like a generous helping of fruit, these pies are ideal.

Score: 3.3/5

*WINNER! Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Mince Pies (6 pack), £2.50

Our tasters voted Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Mince Pies as our winner! They were found to be nice and crumbly with powdery pastry and generously sized. They weren’t too sweet and apparently tasted a bit like Jammy Dodger biscuits, according to one anonymous taster.

Score: 3.5/5

Waitrose All Butter Mince Pies (6 pack), £2.49

Waitrose’s All Butter Mince Pies were picked out as being the most bland with a "weird aftertaste". They were also thought to be a bit boring to look at, though generously sized. If you'd like something more unusual, it might be worth trying Heston Blumenthal's Christmas tree-flavoured option...

Score: 2.9 / 5

Tesco Finest Deep Filled Mince Pies (6 pack), £2.50

These Tesco mince pies came out with a good score as they were deemed to be pretty and very moreish, with lots of sugar. It was also noted that they're quite chewy, so recommended if you're more about the pastry than the mince...

Score: 3.2/5

Aldi Specially selected Mince Pies (6 pack) £1.69

Aldi's offering ticked all the boxes. Nothing out of this (pie) world, but very pleasant and cheery and at a great price. The generous sprinkling of sugar on the top will go down well with the sweet tooth'd.

Score 3/5

Asda Extra Special Mini Mince Pies (12 pack - minis), £2

Asda’s mince pies got a big thumbs up for how petite and dainty they were. Our tasters found them to be very sweet and light and almost looked homemade. An apparent bland taste did seem to let them down a little on the scores though and they came out last by a tiny margin. Still a great option if you like mini snacks, though.

Score: 2.8/5
