Recipes to cook with your toddler

Suspect your toddler might be a whizz in the kitchen? Then ask them to help you out next time you're cooking - simple as pie!

  • Tagliatelle with peas and ham

    Suitable from 1 1/2 years:

    Makes 4 servings

    200g fresh peas, shelled weight
    50 ml olive oil, plus extra oil for drizzling
    1 garlic clove, crushed
    480g dried tagliatelle pasta
    2 slices Parma ham, cut into small pieces
    black pepper, freshly ground
    handful mint, freshly chopped
    handful freshly grated Parmesan cheese

    Bring a medium pan of water to the boil. Add the peas and cook for 2-3 minutes. Drain and plunge into cold water. Set aside. Heat the olive oil in a pan over a low heat and add the garlic. Cook for 1 minute, then add the drained peas and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and cook the tagliatelle until it's firm to bite. Drain and add the pasta to the pea mixture. Toss together with the ham, then season with pepper and add the mint and a drizzle of olive oil. Sprinkle on the parmesan and serve.

  • Trio fish pie

    Suitable from 1 year:

    Makes 8 servings, suitable for freezing.

    1 salmon fillet, 1 smocked haddock fillet, 2 white fish fillets, all boned
    900ml full-fat milk
    3 eggs
    575g potatoes, peeled and quartered
    2tbsp butter
    2tsp dried tarragon
    1tbsp cornflour
    black pepper, freshly ground
    3 large tomatoes, thinly sliced
    2 thick slices stale white bread
    1 tsp dried basil
    1tsp dried paprika
    1tbsp olive oil

    Preheat oven to 220C. Put fish in a pan with 600 ml milk and simmer for 5 mins. Cool, drain, but reserve the milk, then cut fish into pieces. Boil eggs until hard then peel and quarter. Boil potatoes and mash with remaining milk and butter. Reheat the milk the fish was cooked in and add the tarragon. Thicken with cornflour and add black pepper. Put fish in an ovenproof dish with the egg and pour the sauce on top. Arrange the tomatoes over the sauce and smooth over the mash. Crumble the bread, then whizz together with the basil and the paprika. Sprinkle over the mash and drizzle with oil. Bake for 45 mins.

  • Banana and blueberry muffins

    Suitable from 1 year:

    Makes 12

    450g flou
    2tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp baking soda
    125g caster sugar
    50g butter
    110ml full-fat milk
    grated rind of one large orange
    100ml orange juice
    2 eggs
    1/2 tsp vanilla essence
    1 banana
    100g blueberries, washed
    3tbsp sugar with 3 tsp cinnamon

    Preheat oven to 200C. Sieve flour, baking powder, baking soda and caster sugar into a large bowl. In another container, warm the butter until it has melted. Remove from the heat and beat in milk, orange rind and juice, eggs and vanilla essence. Mash the banana and stir into the liquid with the blueberries. Transfer mixture into a bowl and fold in the dry ingredients. Place the muffin cases into a 12 hole muffin tray and divide the mixture between the cases. Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until muffins spring back when pressed in the centre.

    Let your toddler spoon the mixture into each muffin case.

  • Veggie pizza

    Suitable from 18m:

    Makes 4 small pizzas and 8 servings

    1 bag pizza base mix
    250ml tomato pasta sauce
    4 mushrooms, thinly sliced
    1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
    1/2 yellow pepper, thinly sliced
    2tbsp sweetcorn
    150g mozzarella cheese, sliced

    Make up the pizza dough as per instructions on the packet. While the dough is resting, preheat the oven to 180oC, and put all the toppings into individual bowls. When the dough is ready, divide into four and knead each portion to form a circle. Spread tomato sauce over the base and sprinkle over the toppings. Finish with a layer of mozzarella. Cook for 15-20 mins.

    Little helper:

    Ask your child to choose his favourite toppings and sprinkle them over the pizza.
