While UK parents prefer to name their baby girls Olivia and their sons Oliver, American parents are naming their little boys and girls Aiden and Sophia, according to a recent baby names survey.

Knocking Isabella off the top spot, the name Sophia has soared in popularity for girls, whereas Aiden remains the popular choice for boys’ name for the sixth year in a row. New to the favourites are Abigail and Liam, who both shot into the top 10 alongside traditional names like Emma, Chloe and Lily.

However, you’ll also notice that film plays a part in what parents name their children. Aiden was a popular character in Sex and the City, Isabella (Bella) is the name of the leading lady in the Twilight Saga and Jacob (which came in as number 2) is also the name of a character from the vampire film. Names such as Quinn and Finn have risen in popularity, which happen to be the characters from Glee, and old fashioned moniker Betty has also risen in popularity since the US programme Mad Men hit our screens.

Despite it being our predicted top baby name of 2011, Kate dropped 56 places and left the top 100 USA baby names list!
