Kate Middleton goes into labour – what happens now
The royal baby is on the way! Duchess of Cambridge, 33, is in the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital
Kate is officially in the early stages of labour, the Palace has announced by Twitter. At 6am this morning, the Duchess of Cambridge was driven with her husband William in a palace car from their KensingtonPalace apartment to the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, West London.
So how long will the world’s media (and the Royal family) have to wait?
As we all know, the length of the first stage of labour can vary wildly. Usually it’s between 6-20 hours for a first baby and 2-10 hours for a second baby. So we should hear the news by the end of today.
Do we know how her labour is progressing?
At around 8am, a Palace source apparently told the Daily Telegraph’s Chief Reporter that labour was progressing normally.
Where’s Prince George at the moment?
According to the Daily Mail, he’s being looked after at KensingtonPalace by his nanny Maria Borrallo. So he’ll be waking up to have his brekkie with his nanny rather than his mum and dad – and at 21 months he’s probably more interested in his favourite toy right now than the media scrum around his mum.
Who’s looking after Kate?
She’s in great hands. Royal surgeon-gynaecologist Alan Farthing will supervise, assisted by Royal surgeon-gynaecologist Guy Thorpe-Beeston. Professor Marcus Setchell, who led Kate’s first birth, has since retired. Sad fact: Alan Farthing was the former fiancé of the murdered TV presenter Jill Dando.

The new royal baby will be fourth in line to the throne, behind granddad Prince Charles, dad Prince William and brother Prince George. If the baby is a girl, she will still be fourth in line due to recent changes to the law regarding succession to the throne – hurrah!
