He's just become a dad for the first time – and (understandably) Andy Murray's tennis has been a bit off recently.

The 28-year-old British number 1 was knocked out in the 3rd round of the Miami Open on Monday and also made a surprise loss at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells in March.

And now former UK no 1 Annabel Croft has said the new dad is looking "tired and emotionally drained".

Andy's wife Kim gave birth to their first child – daughter Sophia – on 7 February.

"Life has just changed for him and he's just trying to regain momentum, but at the moment it's a bit of struggle," Annabel told BBC Scotland.

More like this

"He hasn't played a lot of tennis this year.

"He looked tired and emotionally drained. It's something that we never, ever throw at Andy that he could lose a match for a lack of fitness.

"I know he had his family over in Miami. Having had three children myself, you know that if there's a baby in the house you can't get away from it and if it's crying at night, your sleep is going to be a little bit disrupted.

"He's probably a little bit more drained in every area and suddenly there's a lot more to think of off the court. So, I definitely think it's affected him."

World no 1 player Novak Djokovic said that becoming a father in 2014 had actually made him a better tennis player.

"Knowing that you're giving up your love and your time to your baby, your child, that gives you freshness in the mind," he told the Radio Times. "Being a father actually gives me more energy than it takes away."

And 2 more of Murray's rivals – Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka – have also played some of the best tennis of their careers after becoming fathers.

So maybe it's just a matter of time (and mastering the sleep routine).
