The Pebble Plus is a very popular car seat from Maxi-Cosi, a brand renowned for its trusted car seats. The Pebble Plus is an i-Size compatible car seat, suitable from birth to 12 months, that can be installed using both the 3WayFix base or seatbelt. Though on the higher price range, the 3WayFix can also be used with Maxi-Cosi's Jade lie-flat car seat (0-6mths) and the Pearl Pro and Pearl Smart (approx 6mths-4 years), so will take you from birth to around 4 years.

Our MFM reviewer rated the Pebble Plus very highly, stating, "I feel really confident that my baby daughter is well protected in this car seat. The newborn inlay means even a small baby will be in the right position to be protected by the side wings."

In our survey, the seat gained an overall score of 8.5 out of 10, with parents saying it felt safe and secure, was comfortable for their baby and easy to attach to their buggy to use as a travel system.

It earns high marks for the way the seat has been designed with the well cushioned newborn insert and impact-absorbing material on the top side wings, with one user commenting: "Great sturdy car seat with very easy fitting to ISOFIX base and a comfy insert for newborns."

Britax Romer Baby-Safe Plus II SHR

Britax Romer Baby-Safe Plus II SHR
  • Suitable for: birth to 12-15 months/13kg
  • Price: £140 (base sold separately for £120)
  • MFM review score: 4.3 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 7.5 out of 10
  • Key features: ISOFIX and seatbelt installation, near lie-flat positioning, travel system compatible

Britax is another well-known and trusted name in car seat safety. The Baby-Safe Plus II SHR can be installed with both an Isofix base and seatbelt and offers a couple of innovative features. The single handed release (the SHR of the car seat's name), allows you to release the seat from the base using the same hand you lift it out with. Britax has also developed technology to enable your baby to lie in a more flat position by adjusting the headrest. It's more a reclined postion than lie-flat but it's a useful feature if you're doing a long car journey with a young baby and don't want them upright for a sustained period of time.

Our MFM reviewer was impressed with the improved safety features such as patented ‘D-SIP technology’ (to increase side-impact protection), combined with comfort for her child.

“Britax has worked hard at making it easy to use," she observed. "For example, when setting up the seat for my 7-month-old baby, it was a great relief that I could adjust the height of the harness and head support without having to thread and rethread the straps through fiddly holes.”

Survey respondents were also impressed, giving it an overall score of 7.5, with one saying it has “excellent safety ratings, and my children have always found them comfortable, even on a journey of several hours”.

BeSafe iZi Go Modular i-Size

BeSafe iZi Go Modular i-Size
  • Suitable for: birth to 12 months/40 to 75cm
  • Price: £140 (base sold separately for £159 - base can also be used with the next stage up iZi Modular)
  • MFM Review Score: 4.7 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 9 out of 10
  • Key features: i-Size compliant, ISOFIX and seatbelt installation, travel system compatible

Norwegian brand BeSafe has long championed car seat safety, particularly rear-facing for longer which has been well-established in Scandinavia for many years. So it's no surprise that the iZi Go Modular focuses on protection, exceeding the safety requirements for i-Size.

Safety features include deep padding around the head area for your newborn and improved side impact protection, and yet despite this the iZi Go Modular is relatively lightweight for an i-Size car seat.

Our reviewer was impressed by how light the seat feels, saying "Despite the fact my son is now tipping the scales at over a stone, I could still carry the seat with him in it one-handed, leaving my other hand free for carrying shopping."

She also calls the magnetic shoulder pads ingenious. "These enabled me to put Eric straight into the seat without having to untangle him or pull wayward straps from beneath his legs.”

The iZi Go also has the advantage of being compatible with a huge range of pushchairs to create a travel system, including Bugaboo, iCandy, UPPAbaby, Silver Cross, Cybex and many more.

In our survey of over 550 parents it received one of the highest scores of 9 out of 10. One mum agreed with our reviewer, “I really liked the magnets that hold the shouler straps open when you have taken your baby out.”

  • MFM Review Score: 4.4 stars out of 5

The Cloud Z provides an attractive package in one seat and base combination: the additional safety levels required by i-Size, a rotating base (which you can then use for your toddler with the Sirona Z) and a near-lie-flat position (though not in the car).

Our MFM reviewer had high praise for the swivel base, declaring, "I love the swivel function of the seat when used with the base. It's so handy when you have a baby who doesn’t want to co-operate!"

Installing is also straightforward and designed to add reassurance. "There's a noise sensor to warn you if the base isn’t sitting correctly."

The lie-flat function, which means your baby can lie in a safer position for sleeping when using a travel system, was much-loved by the parents in our survey, with the Cloud Z gaining a high overall score of 8.9. One parent enthused, "I love the fact it can recline flat and it has a big sunshade too."

gb Vaya i-Size

gb vaya i-size
  • Suitable for: birth to 4 years/105cm
  • Price: from £279
  • MFM Review Score: 4.7 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 8 out of 10
  • Key features: i-Size, ISOFIX installation, 360° rotation, rear-facing until approx 4 years

A good value i-Size rotating seat, the gb Vaya i-Size also gives you the option to use the seat rearward facing until your child is 105cm/approx 4 years old.

Our reviewer praised safety features such as the ‘Driving Direction Control' feature. “It allows you to rotate it to forward-facing after the child reaches 76cm (around 12 months) but not before. When the headrest is adjusted lower than this, the car seat will not rotate to forward-facing, so ensuring parents keep their child rear facing until at least 12 months."

It's a clever safety feature praised by parents we surveyed as well as MFM readers. Scoring an overall 8 out of 10 in our survey, one parent commenting, "I love the 360 turn but with the safety of not being able to turn it forward too early.”

Children can travel rear-facing up to 87cm (roughly around the age of 2) and then use the seat forward facing up to 105cm (approx 4 years).

Many were enthusiastic about the easy-to-use 360° rotation feature, with one saying, "The joy of been able to easily get them in and out of the seat without having to lean over and tackle a car seat strap you can't properly see is well worth the extra pennies."

A good value i-Size rotating car seat, the i-Spin 360 features an easy-to-use one-handed rotation feature. Safety features including side impact panels that automatically engage when the harness is tightened and a headrest with 3 layers of protection inside the wings, and our MFM reviewer found it felt reassuringly safe and strong. Nuna Rebl Plus i-Size

Nuna Rebl Plus
  • Suitable for: birth to 4 years/105cm
  • Price: £350
  • MFM Review Score: 4.8 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 7.6 out of 10
  • Key features: i-Size, ISOFIX installation, 360° rotation, rear-facing until approx 4 years

The Nuna Rebl Plus i-Size promises a 20% thicker steel wall and 35% stronger steel frame compared with its predecessor, the Nuna Rebl. Safety and versatility are the key features of the Rebl Plus, with the i-Size seat offering rear-facing until your child is around 4 years old.

Our MFM reviewer found the Rebl Plus felt reassuringly secure. "The seat feels extremely stable and safe whilst being well-padded and comfortable."

Easy to use, our reviewer commented, "The harness is heavily padded, which made it very comfortable for my baby. It’s easily adjustable with the click of a button and it doesn’t need rethreading when you adjust it."

Plus it's a rotating seat - a much-loved feature by parents in our survey who scored the Rebl Plus 7.6 out of 10. "I love that it rotates - it's so much easier on my back," enthused one parent. "It also meant we kept it rear facing until recently (son is 3 yrs old) and occasionally he still wants to go rearwards facing but it's nice to have the option. Also, the cover is also very easy to take on and off and they supply a summer and winter cover which is great if you need to wash them."

Maxi-Cosi Pearl Pro i-Size

Maxi-Cosi Pearl Pro i-Size
  • Suitable for: 6 months to 4 years/67 to 105cm
  • Price: £229 (3WayFix base sold separately for £199 - base can also be used with Pebble and Jade car seats)
  • MFM Review Score: 4.5 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 7.9 out of 10
  • Key features: i-Size, ISOFIX installation, rear-facing until approx 4 years

Maxi-Cosi's Pearl Pro i-Size seat is the big sibling to the Pebble car seats, sharing the same 3WayFix base - and so reducing the cost of having an ISOFIX base. The 3WayFix base offers a visual and audible confirmation beep when the Pearl Pro is installed correctly, giving many parents welcome peace of mind.

Our MFM reviewer particularly liked the four recline positions and the overall design of the seat area. "The Pearl Pro is nice and deep, and the headrest is adjustable so that your child fits in really comfortably and securely."

She also enthused about how easy it is to install. "You just need to fit the Isofix base in, click the Pearl Pro seat on the top, check for the lights and beep, and off you go."

Cybex Pallas M-Fix

Cybex Pallas M-Fix
  • Suitable for: 9 months to 12 years/9 to 36kg
  • Price: £259.95
  • MFM Review Score: 4.7 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 8.4 out of 10
  • Key features: Seatbelt and ISOFIX installation, adjustable impact shield

The standout feature of the Cybex Pallas M-Fix compared to our other Triple Tested Best Buy car seats is the use of an impact shield (or cushion) instead of a 5-point harness. The shield is slotted in once your child is seated and safely holds them in place. Cybex describes it working “like an inflated airbag during a collision”, where it’s designed to spread the impact.

Impact shields are a bit Marmite – some children find them more comfortable than harness straps, others find them restrictive. Research suggests that they can offer greater protection in a front or rear crash, but not quite as much protection as 5-point harness in side protection. Of course, they pass rigorous crash tests and meet all required safety standards.

What our reviewer loved about the impact shield was it couldn’t be undone or removed by smart, fidgety children. “if you need to thwart a would-be Houdini who likes to wriggle their arms out of harness straps, this is a good alternative,” she observed.

Both our reviewer and parents in our survey praised its comfort, even for young toddlers. Scoring 8.4 out of 10 in the survey, one parent commented, “I prefer the impact cushion to straps as it’s so much easier to get ny child in and it seems more comfy and safe.”

  • Price: £170
  • MFM Review Score: 4.7 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 7 out of 10
  • Key features: Seatbelt and ISOFIX installation, Click & Safe audible harness system

This latest version of the popular Evolva 1-2-3, the SL SICT comes with improved side impact protection and the Britax patented soft-latch (SL).

Our reviewer found the seat very simple to install with the ISOFIT latches enabling an easy and smooth fit. The ease of installing children safely in the seat was also a plus point.

“The ‘Click & Safe’ audible harness system is a really neat feature,” he enthused. “When pulling the harness adjuster strap you hear a click to let you know you have the right tension. This is great as sometimes I question whether my little one is strapped in tight enough, or whether they're strapped in too tight!”

Safety features were a big plus for parents in our survey, who gave it an overall score of 7 out of 10. One parent commented, “It’s strong and roomy and looks both sturdy and safe,” while another added, “It’s easy to buckle and there’s lots of space for your child.”

  • MFM Review Score: 4.8 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 7.9 out of 10

The Silver Cross Balance is a versatile multi-stage car seat, that employs two different configurations, 9 head rest positions and removable padding, to enable the seat to last from toddlerhood to 12 years both safely and comfortably.

Silver Cross is a company keen on innovation and has developed a Car Safety Made Simple app to help parents feel confident that they’ve fitted the car seat correctly. Our reviewer described the app as “incredibly simple to use and a brilliant invention. The car seat felt really safe and secure once in my car.”

Our reviewer also particularly liked the harness straps, a small but important factor. “There are two sets of easily removable padding on each strap, meaning it’s very comfortable for babies and toddlers. I find the straps don’t twist as much as on other seats, which is a major bonus.”

In our survey, parents scored the Balance 7.9 out of 10 with praise for its style (which includes Bamboo fabrics - both anti-bacterial and temperature-regulating to reduce sweatiness). One parent commented, "Not only is this seat so stylish, I love its longevity."

  • Price: £170
  • MFM Review Score: 4.6 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 9.2 out of 10
  • Key features: Seatbelt and ISOFIX installation, SecureGuard abdomen protection, longer seating area for taller children

The third iteration of Britax’s popular Kidfix series, the Kidfix III M has a bold aspiration – to be the most comfortable high-back booster seat in the market.

Its seat shape and longer seating area hit the mark with our reviewer who has a tall 5 year old. “It’s a good size for my daughter and her legs were well supported. She even fell asleep after an exhausting morning, which she rarely does, and her head was well supported.”

Safety features are also a focus, with the SecureGuard designed to protect your child's abdomen and additional side impact protection.

Our MFM reviewer was particularly impressed with the SecureGuard feature. "It helps you position the lap belt securely over your child’s pelvic bone. It makes the transition from toddler to booster seat safer, as it takes the guesswork out of the seatbelt fastening."

Reassurance about safety featured high in feedback from our parents’ survey, which gave the Kidfix III M a very high overall score of 9.2 out of 10. “I love the protector around the belt which helps distribution to prevent injuries. This car seat is so good we have one in our car and one in the grandparents’ car.”

Joie Traver

Joie Traver
  • Suitable for: 3.5 years to 12 years/15 to 36kg
  • Price: £89
  • MFM Review Score: 4.3 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 8.5 out of 10
  • Key features: Seatbelt and ISOFIX installation

The Joie Traver is a good value high-backed booster seat while still offering versatility and strong design features, including side impact air pockets. One of the key plus points is how easy it is to fit and move between cars.

“The ISOFIX connectors spin into the base if you’re not using them,” commented our reviewer, “which makes it easy to transport from car to car and then it slots neatly into your car ISOFIX connectors when needed.”

Our reviewer’s child also found it a comfy ride, more so than other more expensive seats in this group. “There’s lots of padding and support for your child’s legs while the seat is roomy. Also, the belt comes around the child’s body in a comfortable position (as long as you’ve got the headrest set at the correct height).”

Parents in our survey rated the Traver 8.5 out of 10, with one enthusing, “It looks really comfortable and is so easy to remove the outer fabric and clean.”

BeSafe iZi Flex Fix iSize

BeSafe iZi Flex Fix iSize
  • Suitable for: 4 years to 12 years/100 to 150cm
  • Price: £249
  • MFM Review Score: 4.3 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 9.3 out of 10
  • Key features: i-Size, seatbelt and ISOFIX installation, 3 layers of side protection, PAD+ protection

The BeSafe iZi Flex i-Size was the first group 2/3 booster seat designed to meet i-Size regulations. Given BeSafe’s focus on safety, it’s no surprise that the company has chosen to invest in matching the high protection levels that were previously seen in car seats for younger children.

The iZi Flex Fix offers 3 layers of side impact protection, with SIP+ pads that you can clip onto the side of the seat. It also features a lap-belt guide to ensure the belt is positioned correctly.

Our reviewer agrees that these factors mean it’s easier to fit your child in safely, explaining, “The seat has clear guides, and the diagonal strap is held in place very well, as you need to open and fasten the guide to thread the belt through. There’s also an extra cushioning pad (PAD+) that goes high across your child’s chest for additional chin and chest protection.”

Parents scored the iZi Flex Fix a high 9.3 out of 10, with one parent commenting, “I love that it’s long lasting, has all these safety features and was very easy to fit when we tried it out at John Lewis.”

Maxi Cosi Kore Pro i-Size

Maxi Cosi Kore Pro i-size
  • Suitable for: 4 years to 12 years/100 to 150cm
  • Price: £219
  • MFM Review Score: 4.4 stars out of 5
  • Parent User Survey Score: 8.5 out of 10
  • Key features: i-Size, seatbelt and ISOFIX installation, Side Protection System Plus, ClickAssist light

The Kore Pro i-Size is the first group 2/3 high-backed booster from Maxi-Cosi and, as the name suggests, it’s also i-Size compliant, following hot on the heels of BeSafe. Additional side impact protection is provided by its Side Protection System Plus in the side wings around your child’s head. There’s also an innovative ClickAssist light designed to help your child buckle up safely by themselves even in the dark.

Our MFM reviewer particularly liked the easy way you could increase the height and width of the seat at the same time, allowing you to quickly adapt as your child gets bigger.
