Sir Elton John abandons adoption – but vows to support baby
“Massively gutted” singer and his partner campaign against Ukranian laws
Hopes for Sir Elton John and his partner, David Furnish to adopt a Ukranian orphan boy have been crushed after Ukraine authorities deemed them unsuitable parents.
After visiting the Makeyevka orphanage on behalf of his Aids charity, Elton and his partner fell in love with little 18-month old Lev and filed for adoption. However, due to 62-year-old Elton’s age (he is nearly 20 years over the suitable age limit) and the fact that he is in a same-sex relationship, their bid was rejected.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, David Furnish admitted the couple were “massively gutted” but vowed to campaign to change the laws which turned them down. “It’s not possible, the laws don’t support the adoption. We are finding ways of supporting Lev and his brother from here, making sure they have the best health care, education and family options.”
The showbiz pair are determined to make a difference and not abandon the boy just because they can’t bring him to the UK. “We’ll do as much as we can from here and support them as much as we can. We’re going to continue to campaign about those laws too,” he promised.
