A total of 83 beaches in Britain have failed the European Commission’s mandatory minimum water quality standard. This equates to 1 in 7 of British beaches where pollution could cause upset stomachs or ear infections for swimmers.
The Marine Conservation Society who publish the annual Good Beach Guide, has urged authorities to upgrade sewage pipes and crack down on chemical run-off from farms.
Beaches that have failed to comply with the water standard include Rock in Cornwall, a favourite of Price William and other royals, Paignton Sands in Devon and the main beach at Weston super Mare.
