With a biting the chill in the air, a couple of noughts missing from our bank balance and evidence of reckless festive overindulgence showing on our tums, January can sometimes feel pretty bleak.
So, thank goodness then that Hollywood’s awards season has kicked off, beginning with last night’s Golden Globes.
The glamorous guys, gals and gowns of LA were all out in force at the event, which not only added a bit of much needed razzle-dazzle to our Monday, it also turned out to be quite the family affair.
The talk of the town was new mum Adele, making her first red-carpet appearance since the birth of her son.
As the British singer claimed her Best Original Song award for Skyfall, she paid tribute to her new baby and revealed she was out on a mums’ night out with Robbie Williams’ wife, Ayda Field.
“Honestly I’ve come here for a night out with my friend Ayda, we’re new mums! I was not expecting this. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your world for a night. I’ve been p**sing myself laughing,” she joked.
“This is for my boyfriend who convinced me to do it and for my lovely son.”
One of the night’s biggest winners was actor-turned auteur Ben Affleck who scooped Best Director and Best Picture for his thriller Argo, and dedicated his award to wife and mother of his three children, Jennifer Garner.
“I want to thank my wife who is the reason why I’m standing here. I adore you. I love you so much. Thanks for sitting through this. You are my everything. Thank you,” said the Hollywood dad.
It’s no secret that Ben is super-keen to add to his and Jen’s brood (while she remains unconvinced!), perhaps this sweet tribute will win him some brownie points?
You wouldn’t know it to look at her super-svelte figure, but Claire Danes gave birth just last month to baby son Cyrus, and was having a few teething issues getting back on the red carpet.
“I’ve been in baby world,” admitted the star, who won Best TV Actress for her role in Homeland, “I’ve been in sweatpants for quite a while!”
While her son was in the care of his grandparents for the night, Claire also admitted a rather unglamorous side to being a breastfeeding new mum, joking “hoping I don’t leak anytime soon” to Ryan Seacrest.
Luckily her custom-made Versace gown showed no sign of any suspect staining…
On the red carpet, bump-watch reached fever pitch as rumours of Anne Hathaway’s pregnancy were sparked by E! presenter Guiliana Rancic.
“Rumours are that Anne Hathaway may be pregnant,” she claimed in E!’s Countdown to the Red Carpet.
“That’s the buzz on the street right now, which, if true that may be the ultimate award season good luck charm.”
Anne was looking decidedly lithe in her white Chanel column gown, but the peplum detail around her stomach could have been hiding the tiniest of bumps so the jury’s still out at MFM HQ.
In more concrete baby news, definitely-pregnant Kristen Bell was glowing in an embellished silver Jenny Packham gown.
Kristen, who confirmed her pregnancy in November, enjoyed a cheeky smooch with beau Dax Shepard on the red carpet after tweeting on the way to the event “Wish us luck on our nomination for most PDA!”
That’s what we like Kirsten, keeping us in the loop about your baby and advance warning of impending PDAs!
