Expert tips for saving money on family meals this half term

Kids eat free deals can make a big difference to your half-term budget, particularly if you've got more than one hungry child to feed. But it's worth checking the small print before heading out, as not every offer will save you as much as you might expect.

Ben Smye, deals expert at Hotukdeals.com, says planning your meals around the best offers could make eating out much more affordable.

Planning around kids-eat-free offers can cut a typical £100 family meal bill almost in half.

Clair Hughes, Savings Expert at VoucherCodes.co.uk and a money-saving mum, also recommends looking beyond the headline offer to work out how much you're actually saving.

Check the total bill, not just the kids' meal

A free children's meal sounds brilliant, but if you have to spend £20 or more on an adult main to claim it, another restaurant might work out cheaper overall.

Check whether the deal includes drinks, sides and desserts, too. Some restaurants offer a full three-course kids' meal, while others only cover a main.

Look for deals that cover more than one child

If you're taking two or three children out, offers that allow multiple free meals per paying adult can make a real difference.

For example, Bill's and Farmhouse Inns are offering up to two free children's meals with one qualifying adult main during October half term. That could be particularly handy if you're heading out with the kids on your own.

Don't forget restaurant apps and loyalty schemes

Some of the best kids eat free offers aren't automatically applied to your bill. Restaurants including Zizzi, Las Iguanas, Harvester and Toby Carvery require an app, loyalty membership or voucher code.

Download the relevant app and check the offer before leaving home, rather than trying to register with hungry children waiting at the table.

See if you can combine offers with discounted gift cards

Clair also suggests looking for discounted restaurant gift cards, which can sometimes be used alongside kids eat free promotions.

For example, a £40 gift card purchased for £36 would save you another £4 before you've even ordered. However, check the restaurant's terms first, as not all promotions can be combined.

Save the deals for days you're already going out

Finally, don't feel you need to book a restaurant simply because the kids can eat free. The biggest savings come from using these offers on days when you'd already planned to eat out, whether that's after a Halloween activity, a family day trip or a catch-up with friends.

Remember: Most kids eat free offers are dine-in only, can't be combined with other promotions and require an adult purchase. Deals can change, so it's worth checking directly with your chosen restaurant before setting off.
