Clothing chain Primark has withdrawn its range of padded bikinis for 7-year-olds following criticism from child protection organisations.
The company has apologised for “causing offence” and will donate profits from the product to a children’s charity.
Child Protection campaigners criticised the store for stocking the £4 bikini sets, which came in pink with gold stars and black with white polka dots. Chris Cloke, head of child protection awareness at the NSPCC, said, “It’s important that products accessible to children are appropriate to their age. Manufacturers can help by giving more thought to how their products might affect children.”
Jenny Stallard, deputy editor of Practical Parenting magazine, added, “A padded bikini for 7-year-olds is too much at too young an age. No wonder girls are confused about their bodies and self image.”
A spokesman for Primark, which is known for its discounted clothes, said the store has recognised concerns about the product. “The company has stopped the sale of this product with immediate effect.”
