Who is Zara Tindall to Queen Elizabeth II?

Zara Phillips is the daughter of Anne, Princess Royal and her former husband Mark Phillips. Therefore, she is Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughter.

Zara does not hold any royal title like her mother, grandmother or her famous cousins: Princes William and Harry, and Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice.

Traditionally, this is because any children of the monarch’s daughter do not receive a royal title. William, Harry, Eugenie and Beatrice are all the children of the monarch’s sons, Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, respectively.

Interestingly, Anne, Princess Royal, was offered the opportunity to give Zara and her brother Peter royal titles upon birth, but is said to have turned down the Queen’s offer.

Regardless, Zara is currently 17th in line to the British throne (as of April 2018).

How did Zara meet Mike Tindall?

Zara first met former England rugby player Mike in a bar in Sydney, Australia. Apparently, he was there drowning his sorrows at the time!

Prince Harry – also in Australia for the Rugby World Cup – introduced Mike to cousin Zara. The rest, as they say, is history.

Zara and Mike’s wedding

In July 2011, Zara and Mike tied the knot at Canongate Kirk on the ‘Royal Mile’ in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Zara’s 1st pregnancy

In 2013, Zara and Mike revealed they were expecting their first child.

Mum Anne, Princess Royal, was quick to joke about the happy news. After a well wisher congratulated her on her daughter’s pregnancy, she laughed: “Oh, that was nothing to do with me.”

Mia Grace Tindall

On 17 January 2014, Zara gave birth to her 1st child, a baby girl named Mia Grace Tindall. She was born in an NHS hospital, the Gloucester Royal Hospital. Mia weighed 7lb 12oz.

Mia is the Queen’s great-granddaughter, and is the cousin of Prince George and Princess Charlotte. She is 18th in line to the British throne.

With all the spotlight often on George and Charlotte, Mia really stole the show in 2016, when she picked up great grandma Queen Elizabeth II’s handbag in an Anne Leibovitz-shot portrait of Her Majesty and her youngest grand and great-grandchildren.

Zara’s miscarriage

In December 2016, a few weeks after announcing their 2nd pregnancy, a royal spokesperson confirmed that Zara and Mike had sadly miscarried.

“Very sadly, Zara and Mike Tindall have lost their baby,” said the statement. “At this difficult time, we ask that everyone respects their privacy.”

Zara is thought to have been 4 months along when she lost the baby Christmas Eve 2016. She was understood to not be in any medical danger.

Naturally, the couple have spoken very little publicly about their tragic loss. However, one year on, Mike told The Sunday Times:

“One thing you do learn is how many other people have to go through the same thing.

“The saving grace for us has been Mia. However down we feel, she will come running up in our faces.”
