Daily baths are a wonderful time to relax, interact and bond with your baby or child before bed, so we’ve had a look at some of the best baby toiletries including body wash, shampoo and skincare for you to try with your little one.

If you have a newborn, the NHS and the NCT advise not to use anything apart from cotton wipes and clean water to clean your baby, as soap and other products are harsher on a new baby’s skin, which is thinner than the skin of an adult.

Once your little one is a few months old, you may decide to try some gentle cleansing products. We’ve included a list of some of our favourite baby shampoos, body washes and moisturisers which are specially designed for babies’ delicate skin. Once they're toddlers, you can begin to experiment with a wider range of products and perhaps even get them involved in picking their favourites.

When it comes to choosing these products, we spoke to parents across the country, conducted our own tests both in-house and through our Top Testers Club, and considered the many entries into rigorous awards programme, all to find the products that really work for families in the UK. Each of these has been chosen for its stand-out features, be that innovative packaging, gorgeous scents, nurturing ingredients or amazing value.

Whether you’re taking time for fun and games or calming interaction, you might also want to take a look at our best bath toys, best bath towels and best bath seats to get fully kitted out.

How did we choose these products?

When testing these baby and children toiletries with home testers, we asked them to report back on texture of the product, whether it met the intended goal, skin allergies, fragrance, product size, potential length of use, and whether they thought it was worth the money.

Our Best lists are compiled by qualified and experienced parenting journalists. They rely on a number of sources, including our independent reviews, testing undertaken during the MadeForMums Awards, and feedback from our home testing panel and Top Testers Club. Each year thousands of products are put through their paces by hundreds of parents across the country on behalf of MadeForMums, to ensure we’re bringing you honest and true reviews and recommendations.

Best baby moisturiser and skin care

9. Colief Baby Scalp Oil, £5.99

– Best for cradle cap

Colief Baby Scalp Oil

Age suitability: From 3 months+ | Size: 30ml |Awards: Bronze – Baby and child skincare product, MadeForMums Awards 2022

Colief Baby Scalp Oil is a naturally derived oil that helps to soften and treat delicate scalps that may be flaky due to cradle cap. It's completely normal for babies to develop cradle cap or flaky skin on their heads when they're born and it's harmless, but a product like this could help to minimise any irritation.

The oil includes rosehip oil which contains Omega 3 and Omega 6, which aim to promote hydration to the skin, plus calming chamomile and vitamin E to help heal and protect the skin.

"It has made my daughter's hair super soft!" shared parent tester Emma, who tested this with their r 10-month-old baby and mentioned that the cradle cap had become less crusty and prominent from using the oil.

Parent tester Lucy, who tested this with their 7 month old commented, "From only a couple of uses, the oil helped. It's a really lovely consistency, making it easy to apply. The yellow scabs you get with cradle cap were instantly nourished and disappeared. I love how quickly this has soothed my baby's scalp and got rid of her dry flakes."

Pros: Naturally derived ingredients, good consistency, easy to apply, soothing, effective
Cons: Might be greasy for some, small bottle may run out quickly

Available from: Amazon, Holland & Barrett and Colief

Weleda is known for its calming and nourishing properties so this is a great choice if your child has dry skin. Overall, our parent testers were impressed with the premium quality of the product.

Made with organic calendula extract, the face cream provides a protective layer for your baby's sensitive skin, while the lanolin and organic almond oil help to moisturise.

"I have confidence using this because it is extremely natural with nothing synthetic" shared parent tester Rebecca, who tested this with their 6 month old. All Weleda products are Natrue and UEBT certified, and suitable for vegetarians.

The cream has a lovely subtle smell that doesn't overpower your baby's own natural scent. "I was worried this cream might detract from that lovely, fresh, new baby smell but, safe to say, my baby just smelt even more delicious!" Said parent tester Clare, who tested this with their 4-month-old.

This face cream is very straightforward to use and can be easily worked in and absorbed into the skin.

Clare commented, "It feels excellent in quality– one of the nicest textures of baby creams I've tried. It's not too oily or too solid, so glides on very smoothly. Plus you only need a tiny smear, so it feels like the cream is made to last you a while."

Cons: Pricey

– Best intense moisturising lotion

aveeno skin relief lotion

Ideal for sensitive and very dry skin, this lotion ticks all the boxes and is super moisturising. It has rich ingredients to combat very dry skin and offer relief from itching and soreness. The lotion contains a prebiotic triple oat complex which includes oat flour, oat extract and oat oil plus shea butter.

I use this lotion on my own kids and though it is on the pricey side for something we use daily, I just haven't been able to find anything else cheaper that provides the same results. It nourishes my kids' skin and keeps them moisturised for the day – a claim that Aveeno has also made on their website.

It has just the right consistency and is easily absorbed into their skin. There's no overpowering scent, in fact there's barely a smell to it as the lotion is fragrance-free.

This is a good option for young children with dry or who have irritable dry skin and should get immediate skin relief with this lotion.

Our list is not an ordered ranking from 1-10, instead it is a carefully selected group of tried-and-tested products, each of which we believe is best for a different situation or requirement. We don’t just tell you what is best, we help you discover what is best for your family.
