What to consider when choosing a snowsuit

Size – It's important to get a snowsuit that will fit your child, that is not going to pull on their arms and legs. Some snowsuits are designed for newborns and young babies while others don't have feet and are suitable for toddlers too.

Ease of dressing – Putting an all-in-one suit on isn't easy. Now, imagine taking off a wet snowsuit. You're going to want easy access for nappy changes and to be able to easily get the suit off them as they come back into the house. Key things to lookout for are popper fastenings for babies and double front zips.

Feet and hand covering – As previously mentioned, the snowsuits for younger babies may have feet. Snowsuits for toddlers are likely to be footless so they can wear their own boots or shoes. Some snowsuits have the added bonus of coming with removable mittens or foldover cuffs which can be really useful to keep their hands warm.

Style – Warmth and waterproofness are the 2 key things when buying a snowsuit. However, you can also get some really cute ones as well. There are brightly coloured options, muted more formal options and others with fun patterns. We have included lots of different styles in this list so you should find something you and your baby or toddler will love.

A note about snowsuit safety

Although all-in-one padded snowsuits are great for cold weather, there are some situations where you'll need to remove them to keep your baby safe. Never put a child in a car seat while they are wearing a thick snowsuit: the padding on the suit can stop you from being able to fasten the harness tight enough, which could be very dangerous in the event of a collision. Take your child out of their snowsuit or bulky coat before putting them in the car.

You should also take care with snowsuits while babywearing. The added heat of your body in addition to the thick, cosy padding of the snowsuit could cause your child to overheat. It's also not advised to dress your child in an item with built-in feet while babywearing, as the position of the legs in a carrier can can cause the fabric to pull, and this could constrict blood flow to the legs and feet.

How did we choose our 10 of the Best?

When testing and selecting the best baby and toddler snowsuits, we considered sizes available, warmth, waterproofness, style and value.

Our 10 of the Best lists are compiled by qualified and experienced parenting journalists. They rely on a number of sources, including our independent reviews, testing undertaken during the MadeForMums Awards, and feedback from our home testing panel and Top Testers Club. Each year thousands of products are put through their paces by hundreds of parents across the country on behalf of MadeForMums, to ensure we’re bringing you honest and true reviews and recommendations.

Our list is not an ordered ranking from 1-10, instead it is a carefully selected group of tried-and-tested products, each of which we believe is best for a different situation or requirement. We don't just tell you what is best, we help you discover what is best for your family.
