The Moby D Wrap is a stylish wraparound baby ‘sling’ for fashion-conscious mums, and is part of the Moby Wrap range created by two American mums.

Technically, the Moby D is a wrap not a sling. A wrap is different from a baby sling. A sling usually has narrow straps or goes across one shoulder, while a wrap uses both shoulders, as well as back and hips, to carry the weight of a baby.

In the Moby Wrap range, there are three baby wrap models: the Moby Wrap, the Moby D and the Moby Select. The Moby D is the “D-Luxe” version of the Moby Wrap. It features a central fabric panel of woven cotton, brocade silk, microfleece or silkscreened fabric that’s 95% cotton and 5% spandex.

The wrap comes with an instruction booklet so you can learn how to create all the different holds (cradle hold for nursing, baby facing you, baby facing the world, baby on your hip or on your back).

The weight distribution, the versatility and the fact you can use it even with toddlers all give it the edge on conventional carriers.

You can even exercise with your baby safely tucked in, breastfeed, do household chores... if you’re not convinced or want to do the exercises, read the instructions and watch the demo. In the UK, you’ll find the Moby D available online through Little Possums.

What we love

I was delighted with my Moby D Wrap as my conventional baby carrier gave me backache. The Moby D Wrap distributes weight evenly from your shoulders, back to hips and cocoons your baby in very soft cotton. Whenever I wore my it, mums paid me compliments as the Chinese silk panel, which aims to offer more support for heavy babies, is very attractive.

Once I got the hang of it, I carried Michela in the Moby D Wrap while doing housework, going to the shops, travelling on the bus, visiting my GP (where no prams were allowed inside the surgery) and anywhere else where a pram would be a bulky nuisance (think as buildings with no lift).

If Michela fell asleep while I walked, I would tuck her head under the stretchy cotton fabric for added safety and comfort. But, best of all, my hands were free to carry bags, make cups of tea etc.

Another mum managed to carry twins in it and it certainly helps if you want to hold your baby while looking after a sibling.

The Moby D Wrap can be a great soother. Mums with colicky or fussy babies who don’t go to sleep during the day swear by it.

One size fits all, so if you want to share it with your partner you can, and there’s also the plainer, unisex Moby if you prefer, for the cheaper price of £38. It’s easy to clean as it can be machine-washed, although it might shrink slightly once you start wearing it again it’ll stretch back to its original size.

And, last but not least, the Moby D Wrap is an ethical product. The manufacturer set up a factory in Thailand where employees enjoy good wages and benefits.

What to watch out for

The only drawback of the Moby D Wrap – as with any similar carrier or sling - is that you need to learn how to use it effectively. I practised in front of a mirror for a few days while tugging at the fabric, but when I cracked it, I used it every day, everywhere. Other mums mastered it quicker than I did, so don’t be put off!

Carrying your baby in a Moby D Wrap can make you a bit warm. I used to wear it under my jacket and keep the jacket open. When summer came, I wore it on top of a vest. Cotton is a breathable fabric, though.

Who is the Moby D Wrap best for?

Mums who want free hands and even weight distribution in a stylish package.
