Breastfeeding but need to introduce a bottle to your baby?

Although it may have been a challenge to get the hang of breastfeeding, there may be times when you want (or need!) your little one to take a bottle.

Perhaps a return to work is looming, you have a big event coming up, or your partner wants to share some of the feeding burden with you (another 3am feed anyone?).

Whatever the reason, once you’ve got breastfeeding established (which can take up to six weeks, says the NHS), it’s usually possible to offer bottles alongside breastfeeding, bearing in mind that exclusive breast milk for around the first six months is recommended.

But not all bottles are made equal, so we’ve picked our top choices (with a bit of help from our trusty MFM testers) to help make mixed – or combination – feeding that bit easier.

From flattened teats and wide, flexible tops to emulate the breast, to anti-colic systems and self-sterilising bottles, check out our best bottles for breastfed babies to find the right one for you…

Dr Brown’s bottle has been designed with an 100% vacuum-free vent system that it says is proven to reduce windy colic.

This was something that MFM tester Kim, mum of 1, noticed when using the bottle with her son who suffers with colic. She says: “The anti colic function of the bottle was ideal as you have the option to use the bottle with the vent on it or removed if baby is not struggling as much with wind/colic.

“We found that we did not suffer with anywhere as much wind -even compared to some of the other well known brands we have tried.”

The bottle has also been designed with a teat that emulates the breast, which MFM tester and mum of 2, Claire likes. She says: “My son took to the Dr Brown bottles straight away – the teats are soft and malleable and were flexible as he was drinking.”

It’s had a glowing response from our testers, in particular from mum of 1, Sophie who says it’s the “calmest” she has seen her breastfed baby with bottle. She says: “Worth every penny for getting my baby to take a bottle more easily and more importantly she was happy drinking from it. She was even drifting off to sleep like she does when breastfeeding and had a lot less wind than when we’ve used other bottles.”

MFM tester, Leonna, used the bottle with her daughter and says: “Luna is a very fast drinker and the suckle aspect allowed her to pace her feed which without a doubt eliminated the guzzling aspect I have had problems with in the past.”

MFM tester and mum of 2, Samantha particularly likes how the teat is designed to mimic the breast. She says: “After having used the Lansinoh Momma bottle I found I especially liked the NaturalWave teat – it is soft and malleable feeling more like the skin of a nipple as oppose to a plastic teat.”

Scoring the bottle 4.7 stars, mum Sarah who breastfed her baby says the self-sterilising feature is a standout feature for her. She says: “Being a breastfeeding mum, the whole world of bottles that need sterilising seem like rocket science to me, so for someone to introduce a bottle that sterilises itself is a giant tick in my book!”

One of our MFM Awards testers says her baby switches from breast to bottle “without trouble” when using the Closer to Nature bottle. She commented: “I feel the teat  shape very much impacts on the baby liking the bottle, as we used different bottles when our baby was at hospital and found he never even liked them.

MFM tester Deborah has used the bottle with her breastfed baby and says: “My newborn, who is mostly breastfeeding, took to this bottle straight away, so I have been impressed by this kit. The ergonomic design also makes it easy for the parent to hold.”

MFM tester and mum of 1, Emma commented on this feature saying: “The weighted straw works really well and makes feeding much easier, especially when you have to sit very upright with them.

“I was initially worried about keeping this straw clean but a really handy sized brush comes with the bottle.”

MFM tester and mum of 1, Shannon’s little one suffered from reflux but she’s also noticed an improvement when using the Nuby bottle. She says: “Although she still experiences a little reflux it isn’t as bad as it was thanks to the Nuby anti-reflux bottles.”

Our MFM tester and mum of 1, Jenny tested out the bottle with her 9-month-old and particularly likes the design of the teat.

She says: “I really like the teat and the extra number of valves (3) means that it’s not so important which way round the bottle is being held, and I can imagine it would help minimise nipple confusion.”
