2012’s trends for mums, babies and children revealed

The MFM team has been busy scouting out the top fashion, gadgets, furniture, baby and toddler trends for 2012. It’s all about bold colours, British spirit and another 80s revival – yippee!

All things British

Get ready to feel uber patriotic come summer 2012. With the Queen’s jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics, red, white and blue colours are going to dominate the clothes rails on the high street. We’re already drinking our tea from china cups and humming the National Anthem in preparation.

For a traditional yet chic take on the British trend head to Marks & Spencer where little girls’ outfits come complete with corsages and little boys’ with adorable bow ties.

Get the whole family involved with delightful British themed crockery from Sainsbury’s. Even jam sandwiches will feel like the height of sophistication when delicately eaten off Union Jack tableware.

So your baby is hot to trot for the spring/summer season, check out iCandy’s cherry Special Edition. The regal colours and stylishly understated Union Jack design make this the ultimate accessory for travelling in British style. We put the Cherry buggy through its paces, so make sure you check out the full review before you buy.

Candy colours

Summer wouldn’t be summer without some candy colour in the shops and there’s going to be no shortage come 2012 – the clothes look good enough to eat. Very took this on board quite literally with a candy themed press event, our particular fav being minty green skinny jeans. Get the kids in matching colour pop jeans by heading over to New Look, where their 915 range has a rainbow of denim pieces on offer.

Candy colours spill over into accessories at Matalan where pink, green and yellow sunglasses will ensure your kids’ outfits are functional and fashionable. Even Ugg have moved over to the light side, with funky flip flops in bright purple, green and pink flower patterns.

Spruce up your changing bag in time for summer with Asda’s adorable Little Angels range. The baby products and treats for both mum and baby look adorable in a range of cutesy candy colours.

80s comeback

We almost needed shades on to see New Look’s 2012 collection. From neon slouch tees to animal print jeans, your kids will look like they’ve just stepped out of Ab Fab, darling!

There’s plenty of gorgeous options for mum too. Channel your inner Eddy with some sensational kaftans from Debenhams, as well as some exciting bursts of yellow and orange throughout the various ranges.

Keep the bright colour theme going into the kitchen, with Bloom’s nano urban highchair. We like rock red, but don’t forget there’s also coconut white, harvest orange and gala green if you’re looking for that extra zap of colour for the new year.

Ahoy there sailor! There’s something about the nautical look that means it always seems fresh, even though it comes back into fashion year after year. Clean cut white and blue stripe dresses and polo shirts at Marks & Spencer capture the look effortlessly. Matalan ensures little feet are boat-deck ready with it’s great light loafers for the boys in a smart navy blue. Girls will adore the easy and comfortable sandals on offer too.

Ugg’s making sure you look ready for a day by the pier with it’s comfy and stylish raffia heeled wedges while Very’s fashion forward trilby hats are perfect for summer.

Be ready to take in the sea air with a Baby Bjorn carrier, a favourite among the celebs. Now all we need is that good weather!

Mini-me alert

2012 looks set to be the year of the mini-me, with children looking just like mum and dad. Even newborns are getting in on the act with a chic Apple-esque white baby monitor that syncs up with your iPhone, iPod touch or iPhone.

The fash pack’s caught the mini-me bug too, with Ugg showcasing shoes in both adult and kids sizes. Marks & Spencer is one of the frontrunners of this trend with adorable blazer and smart trousers for fashionable little lads.

New Look has truly caught onto this trend with lots of lace, cut out designs and slogan print tees making it into both the girls’ and women’s ranges for 2012.

Matalan’s cool mini lumberjack shirts and funky crocs also ensure boys keep up with dad (whether dad can keep up with them is another story!).
