The BabyDan Flexi Fit Wooden Gate fits unusual spaces in style. Although a little tricky to fit, it is robust and well designed – a good all rounder.

Created by Danish company BabyDan, the Flexi Fit Wooden Gate fits any opening 72.1 cm – 110.9cm (or if fitted outside a door frame, a maximum width of 5cm narrower). It consists of an attractive rubberwood slatted gate panel, with silver or brown plastic fittings, which you screw into the wall or door. The fittings can be adjusted to different widths at the top and bottom of the gate, enabling it to fit uneven walls or unusual spaces. If fitting the gate to a door, the wall fittings can be used either inside or outside the door frame.

What we love

We fitted our three gates in a Victorian terrace with wonky walls and curved banisters. My husband (naturally) took on the DIY job and there was considerable muttering over the number of pieces to fit, but once he had fitted one, it became considerably easier to tackle the rest! There is no horizontal bar at the bottom of the gate to step over, making it much less likely to cause a trip hazard which I was concerned about with the grandparents.

The gate can be opened with one hand using a slide and lift movement with your thumb, but like most gates there is a knack to doing this. The gate opens both ways, which is great because it is flexible whichever direction you are going through and makes it much easier for visitors. The gate panels can also be easily detached without having to remove all the wall fittings – useful if you know you don’t need the gate for a while, but will be using it again when your next child starts moving.

I wanted attractive gates and the wood and silver finish is much more subtle than the typical white metal safety gates. The gates and the fittings are also very strong – my two-stone bruiser Peter can hang onto the gate pulling backwards like King Kong and it does not budge!

What to watch out for

The gates do take some time to fit, especially if you have unusual walls at an angle like we do. However, the fact that it fits odd spaces is exactly why we bought this product! Take time to lay out all the bits first – as there are quite a few. When using the gate, because of its flexible fittings, it’s possible to close the top lock and miss attaching the bottom of the gate properly into its slot. Sometimes, I need two hands to close it, but I can always open it with one hand. The gate is also a little bit pricier than some other models but you’re paying extra for style.

Who is the BabyDan Flexi Fit Wooden Gate best for?

Mums with unusually-sized doorways.

MadeForMums verdict

Overall this gate is a nice piece of furniture. It can be a bit tricky to fit and you might need to use two hands to close it on occasion. However, it effectively fits unusual spaces and openings, offering flexibility and good design. As a result it’s a bit more expensive than some other gates.
