The Aladdin is a traditional crib/cot, but one side can be dropped to allow it to sit flush against your bed. It’s co-sleeping without the bed-sharing worries you might have.
The idea behind a co-sleeper is that you can breastfeed during the night without getting out of bed, and having your baby close to you will increase bonding and milk flow. If your baby stirs, you can reach over, and if you’re still feeling the effects of birth or have had a c-section, it’s easy to lift your baby out.
What we love
After four weeks of the worst sleep known to woman, I nearly kissed the postman when the Aladdin arrived. My partner and toddler informed me it was easy to build, and half an hour later they’d done the job.
Initially, I was worried that having a cot attached to the bed would mean I’d lose my beloved bedside drawer. There are, after all, a lot of chocolate biscuits in there. But the great thing about the Aladdin Co-sleeper is that it comes on castors, so you can wheel it into position – and into another room once your baby can bear to let you out of his or her sight for two seconds.
Being shallow, I was relieved to see that the design is good, in a cool, European kind of way, which blended in nicely with my Ikea bed. It’s made from high quality German beech, and all the paints and lacquers used are non-toxic. I think the fact that it’s great looking and obviously a quality product does justify the £200-plus price tag.
The Geuther Aladdin Co-Sleeper is not a miracle product that suddenly made baby Evie sleep, but there’s a definite advantage in not having to reach too far on one of her many wakings. Also, because she was right near me I tended to catch her at the stirring stage, rather than when she was really kicking off and crying. I think that made her easier to settle after a feed.
The mattress is very comfortable. How do I know that? Because I regularly fall asleep with my head on it.
If Evie ever stops wanting to stare at me while I’m sleeping, the Aladdin will still come in handy because it can be converted back into a traditional cot, too, though it is suitable only up to 9kg.
What to watch out for
The Geuther Aladdin Co-Sleeper is quite a big investment for a bed that won’t take you through to toddlerhood – it’s suitable only until 9kg. While this isn't unusual for a co-sleeper, there are options around that do last longer.
And once your baby gets to the wiggling stage, there’s a chance that he or she will try and get even closer to you – basically, they’ll end up on the bed with you wondering how they got there!
