In a nutshell

A great alternative to a Moses basket with multifunctional, space-saving solutions. However, it does require DIY knowledge to assemble

If you're looking for a beautiful and chic place for your child to slumber away their first nights then I can thoroughly recommend the highly sophisticated Modo Crib by award-winner Cosatto. With its sleek good looks and on-trend styling, this elegant piece of furniture wouldn't look out of place in the nursery of an A-lister.

Designed to both complement the existing range of Cosatto’s Modo furniture and fill a gap in the high-end baby market, the Cosatto Modo Crib, £250, doubles as a place for your child to sleep and, when they’ve moved into a cot, it can be used as a handy nursery bench for a night-time cuddle and a bedtime story. The crib doesn't come with a mattress, although Cosatto sell the Cosi Kip mattress for £15, which is an additional expense. On an eco-friendly note, for every piece of Modo furniture bought, including this crib, Cosatto plant a tree.

What we love

The smooth, curved legs and chunky Brazil Nut wood profile meant I could easily position the crib where I wanted it in the room while the useful acrylic side panels allowed me to see my son, Nathaniel, as he slept. Because the crib was standing by a white wall, Nathaniel loved that he could see his reflection in the Perspex-style material (although he didn't know it was him) and thought he had a friend lying next to him – it was almost a shame to turn out the light at night. One mum who bought this product commented that the acrylic panels helped to reflect the sunlight into the crib when positioned by a window, and this helped with her baby's jaundice.

At nearly a metre in length, the crib is a substantial size, at least 10cm longer than my Moses basket, and could hold even the longest of babies until they’re at an age to sit or kneel. There's plenty of room to spare to easily tuck in sheets and blankets, while also leaving space for Nathaniel's favourite toy elephant.

The high wooden end panels also meant I could leave a muslin draped ready for night-time feeds without worrying Nathaniel would pull it down on top of him.

My little prince loved the Modo Crib, while lots of my family and friends have commented on how stylish the crib is and how it looks like a little bed. You'll definitely be the envy of your other new mum friends.

What to watch out for

One of the biggest drawbacks to the Cosatto Modo Crib was that it arrived flatpacked rather than part-assembled, which I hadn't expected considering the price point, and the instructions weren't all that clear. I had almost fully erected the crib when I realised I had to take several pieces apart again to fit in the side panels.

When it came time to install the cream storage drawer, I found I was screwing in the runners barely being able to see what I was doing. When the drawer was finally fitted, although it was smooth and silent on closing, it seemed to catch, making it difficult to open. Having said this, the crib does come with a substantial 4-year guarantee, so you can easily iron out any teething problems.

The Modo Crib is perfect if you want your baby to learn from an early age to sleep in his nursery or for a home with an open-plan layout, such as a studio apartment, so you can see your baby sleeping at a glance. However, if you prefer to keep your baby, like I did, in the same room with you during the daytime, you might be uncomfortable not being able to easily transport the crib from one floor to another.

Who is the Cosatto Modo Crib best for?
