Jané is a Spanish brand launched in the 1930s which makes and tests baby products.

Its Babyside bedside crib joins a select few in this new market that helps parents stay closer to their babies for longer.

The side unzips, allowing for easy night feeds, and it can also be used as a standalone crib.

Not as well-known as the major bedside crib brands, such as Snuzpod (£199.95) and Chicco Next2Me (£239), the Jané crib shares many of their innovative features as well as boasting other pros that its competitors do not.

Winning the gold spot in the MadeForMums Awards 2017 in the co-sleeping crib/baby crib category, the Jané Babyside bedside crib impressed judges for its roomy size and ease of use.

First impressions?

My first impression was quite how large the crib is. While Moses baskets are often outgrown long before the 6 months they are recommended for, I would be very surprised to see a six-month-old that has outgrown this crib.

How does it compare to other cribs/cots you have used?

We have been using the Snuzpod previously and I can see arguments for both choices. The Jané is much wider at 67cm, compared to the Snuzpod’s 42cm width, making it a more comfortable choice for bigger babies. The Jané crib is lighter and easier to transport and change the height on and it comes as a complete package. The Snuzpod however suits our decor more and I like the classic and easy to clean wood look and the shelf below for storage.

So, why choose a co-sleeper?

A co-sleeper crib is ideal for those early days as it allows your baby to stay close to you, and for you to be able to feed them without even having to sit up. A safe middle ground between co-sleeping and using a crib, the co-sleeper crib is reassuring for baby but allows everyone their own space.

8 of the best co-sleeping cots and bedside cribs for safe sleeping

What age is the crib suitable for?

This crib is suitable from birth until 9kg or 6 months. We have been using it with our 9-month-old as she isn’t pulling up yet and is still under 9kg.

What’s better – a Moses basket or the Jané bedside crib?

For me, this is the easiest question and I would recommend the Jane bedside crib over a Moses basket. It is more convenient, closer and much more generously sized so it will last much longer.

Do you need a Moses basket, co-sleeper or crib?

How easy is it to see your baby when they are in the crib?

If you have the side down then you can see the baby as well as if they are in the bed with you. With the side up you can still see them well through the mesh panel ‘door’.

Is it easy to move around your home once assembled?

The assembled product is incredibly light to pick up and easy to carry around a room, however it is easier to fold it down to get it far as it is quite wide.

How does it fit onto the bed?

The crib is attached to the bed using webbing which wraps around the frame of your bed. It is incredibly secure.

How did you find unzipping the side?

Unzipping the side was easy and I like the fact that the catches are slightly hidden so that older siblings can’t mess around with it. It takes only seconds to lower the side.

Can it be used standalone as well as for co-sleeping?

Absolutely, if you decide that co-sleeping isn’t for you, or want to transition your baby from co-sleeping to their own room then this works as a standalone crib as long as the side is firmly zipped up.

Does it rock?

No, it doesn’t rock.

How many height positions does it have?

There are 6 height positions meaning it adapts to pretty much any mattress.

Tell us about the incline

Perfect for babies with reflux or colds, the mattress can be tilted to keep the head higher than the feet.

What do you think of the size of the crib?

I was really impressed with the size of the crib and my 9-month-old had plenty of space in every direction. This is definitely more generous than a Moses basket or traditional crib.

How comfy is it for your little one?

My daughter seemed really comfortable, the mattress is relatively firm as all new baby ones are but it was soft and squishy too.

Does the Jané bedside crib feel robust and durable?

The bedside crib feels stable and secure but not as robust as the wooden competitors. I think this crib is perfectly durable for its purpose and would easily last for more than one child.

What’s in the box?

  • Frame and crib
  • Mattress
  • Bottom sheet
  • Crib duvet

Is it easy/hard to build the bedside crib? Instructions useful? How long does it take?

It was really easy to build and I only checked the instructions to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything obvious. It only took less than 10 minutes,

What would you have wanted to know before you purchased the crib?

How much space it would take up next to the bed - I would suggest mapping the area out in your bedroom to ensure it fits next to your bed.

Who would the Jané bedside crib be most useful for?

Any parent of a new baby, especially those planning to breastfeed.

Is it good value for money?

This crib costs around £200 which is great value considering everything is included, from the mattress to the sheets. You don’t need to buy anything else.

MadeForMums verdict:

This is an ideal first bed for a new baby and will last easily to six months. It is adaptable, portable, well made and comfortable for baby,
